This section is to help finding the correct paint for the different years a M151 can represent. We should also add hints for correct stars and other numbers

US Army Viet Nam

Correct paint for presenting a M151, M151A1 is semi-gloss olive drab (SG-OD) Federal Standard shade 24087. The hood number & logo “US ARMY” were size 3”, later reduced to 2” size. All lettering was in matt white shade 37875.

Star size on hood is 12in point facing forward, located so that star is not obscured when windshield is down. Appropriate technical document is TB746-93-1. It should be noted that USAF located the hood star so it pointed at the windshield during this era.

US Army 4 color camo

Introduced by TC5-200 in 1975,this “painting by numbers” system was adopted by the US Army and later by the US Air Force and the US Marine Corps. It consisted of 4 colours in a ratio of 45%, 45%, 5% and 5%. The specific colours used varied from World zone to zone and from season to season. An example is the patterns used in Europe, which differed from Summer to Winter. The basic idea was that as the seasons changed, and the landscape changed likewise, then vehicles could be adapted to blend in with the different landscape by altering one (or two) of the 4 colours rather than having to repaint the whole vehicle. The same theory applied when a vehicle was transferred from, say, Europe to a red desert environment.

Although the 4-colour system gave rise to many aesthetically pleasing patterns, it was overly complicated and time-consuming to operate. Eventually, it was superceded by the introduction of the 3-colour “CARC” system which is still in use. Appropriate technical document is TB43-0209 (1976).
