Restoration section?

Postby Francis Marion » December 6th, 2012, 9:35 am

As I try to psych myself up to the daunting task of disassembling and restoring my A1 this winter, I was wondering if others here thought that having a dedicated section for restoration projects would be a good idea. I know we have witnessed many great projects but they are quickly buried among other topics in either the technical, general, or photo sections. I think it would be great to have one section where I can browse through other peoples rebuilds to help me with knowledge and ideas to improve my own restoration project. Of course, I would also document mine with plenty of photos so others could avoid all the mistakes that I will likely make along the way.

Okay FM, I think it's a great idea and have no understanding of why your suggestion just sat here. Maybe with the holidays it was too easily read and forgotten. This wouldn't sit like an empty discussion group, recommendations would need to be made and a moderator required to move the best documented projects could be linked in an orderly fashion, not just first come first listed. Possibly even just an categorized index of links to the original posts. It doesn't take too much practical thought to recognize this as a good suggestion for the G838 site. Sounds like Floyd's on board as well :D

Got my vote. I love watching projects coming together. (Or apart, and back together!) :D

I will be back home in mid Feb. for just under 5 weeks and my only planned activity is to evict the wife's car from the garage, turn it into an auto body shop, and start the restoration of my A1. Having an organized restoration section would save me a lot of research time. If all we need is a moderator then I can offer all that time I will be saving (that's if you trust me with that much power  ).

I don't know? A politician as a moderator............................
The moderating is not the issue, we just need the section and that is a decision that the site owner has to make. I would strongly suggest you do not try to cram a restoration, you will not be happy with the end result. You need to be patient and take your time.

The name's Francis Marion. Any of you guys call me Franc... politician, and I'll kill you.

BTW, I have no delusions of completing a restore in 5 weeks. The plan is to start it. At most, I hope to have it disassembled and back from media blasting with a weldable primer coat to keep it from rusting when I'm back at work. Maybe a few easy welds if everything goes perfectly and I feel ambitious with my new welder.

P.S. Moose, you awake? Anybody know if there's any danger in waking up our Moose?

I think it's a great idea, adding it is most likely up to Jim, I think the space used by the Reenacting/Living History section would better serve the members of this Form as the Restoration section. I feel that "for most of the members here" the Living History/Reenacting post fit in the General Discussion, Favorite Pictures and other areas that we have, not solely dedicated to the 151s. :| just my .02 :)

Your going to paint the entire vehicle in weld through primer?! Man, That will be pricey. Just bear in mind that NO primer is waterproof so keep it inside while primed.

Several people have tried, obviously none succeeded. Yet. Of coarse there was that episode in the spring where I almost did myself in with that staph infection. Since the doctors all told me I would not have made it through the night if I had not gotten to the hospital I believe someone was sending me a message. Therefore I will not be inviting any death threats. But Floyd, man! You really shouldn't talk about Francis that way!

I didn't say I wouldn't redirect them though.
