A-2 on Gov. Liq.

Unread post by Bucolic » November 5th, 2016, 12:30 am

There's an A-2 with a trailer on Gov. Liquidators. The trailer is not a 416 type trailer, it is to carry the jeep on.

I believe this jeep was at the 2015 Piston, Pin Ups show at the Schellville Airport in Sonoma (hosted by the North Bay Air Museum). I thought the trailer was a nice set up and the owner was happy to show it off. The M151 was in good shape and it appeared to run nice. My M151 and this one were parked a stones throw away from each other. I wonder why its for sale at auction.

I really thought about making a similar trailer for mine. I decided against it after factoring the cost to build it. I was able to buy a 20ft equipment trailer for about half of what it would cost me to build a dedicated trailer. Now I can haul my tractor when needed and my M151 and M416 (hooked together) when going to parades ect.

paint quality on the jeep seems really bad, like if a brush was used. And not sure if it is fun to get on and off that trailer having those steep ramps.

Overall I think it is in excellent condition. I don't see too much wrong with the paint, it has been touched up but this is obviously a driver. Look at the pedals, it did not just sit around. The trailer appears to be a very highly modified M-116 trailer. The reason it is on auction through GL is that they tend to get top dollar for things, it is a private auction.

I bet that jeep has many layers of paint. If something does not look perfect on pictures, it will be much worse in real life. Anyway, just reminds me how lucky I can call myself having a "Barstow" with now 4400 miles of which 4320 were driven by me.

I get a kick out of picture #30, I recognized that number as soon as I saw it! High performance 327 Chevy motor, Pre-1967, high compression pistons and heads, small journal crankshaft. I had a couple of those motors.

so Rick, two questions:

1. what exactly is picture 30 showing?
2. Why did you deal with such small motors back in the day? I still regret that I was cheap and did not get the 455 when I had the chance but took the 400ci motor instead

# 30 is showing the block casting number on a small block Chevy motor. Back then I did not have the money for big blocks plus they were fairly new to the scene. The only big blocks around in the early to mid 60's were the 409 Chevy, 390 Ford and 393 and 413 boat anchor Chryslers. Late 60's is when the good stuff started coming out with the 396, 427 Chevy, The 428, 429 Ford. The 383, 440 and especially the 426 Hemi Chrysler. In 78 I had a 72 Chevelle with the 402 big block Chevy which was a 396 bored out to 402 and highly modified. 11.5 compression and a monster cam. So I did go with big block once the money came in.

OK, what's going on here? Not only did the trailer reappear on Gov Liquidation, but now the M151A2 itself is back on the auction block, 06 Dec auction start date. No trailer this time, just the truck.

Is there some background we should be aware of, or is this just a sale that fell through?

Hard to say, I never saw the final sale price that you saw but I did not put a bid on it so I did not have access to the final bids. I saw that it closed below the reserve. It is hard to say what is going on, My guess is that the owner has decided to try to sell them separately which makes no sense to me at all since very few vehicles are going to fit on that trailer. That trailer is for a M-151 and that is it. But people get greedy and go for every last dollar they THINK they can get and usually end up losing in the end. When you see the same vehicle over and over the price is going to go down nine times out of ten.

That trailer scares the crap out of me, I don't like hauling vehicles on trailers with only one axle. A few years ago, I saw truck hauling an off road jeep on a similar trailer, the tire blew out and the end result was the truck ended up loosing the jeep as he lost control of the trailer. Not a pretty site.

I like those tires, they look better than the standard light truck tires the PO put on my MUTT. The whole package might have been pretty expensive since the reserve price wasn't met, then there is the 10.5% buyer premium to add on top of the purchase price. I think the trailer if it was built with two axles would be a more stable ride like Jason said.
