71 A2 on CL $5500 (Not Mine)

Unread post by Surveyor » April 20th, 2017, 1:49 pm

If it is just the head gasket.... Looks to be in great shape. Good thing it's not closer or I'd be tempted to part with the 60 and get it..... who am I kidding. I'd want both!

Got a hauler to move it for $575. Near Indianapolis to West Palm Beach. I should have it here next week.

Received this truck yesterday. It was a pleasure to get one that could be driven off the auto hauler.

Body is excellent, as well as the overall mechanics. Starts, drives, steers, and brakes. Steering needs to be tightened up. The Engine overheated, but we fixed that very quickly. Brakes are a little grabby, but that is a simple fix.

Lights work, but not the signals. Another easy fix. Fuel gauge and temp guage does not register. I'm sure I can fix that as well.

Only obvious missing part is the battery cover. I have an extra, so no biggy.... Some dents, but nothing that can't be fixed easily.

Overall, this is a very nice, unmolested M151A2.

Thumbs up.

Was it the head gasket as they surmised?

LOL.... no. We fired up the engine, and it promptly over heated. There is no sign of water in the oil. There was also no bubbles in the radiator prior to the over heat, so we pulled out the thermostat, and restarted it. No over heat.

I has since start running really rough. I think the fuel is old. I'm going to drain the tank and refill it with fresh fuel after changing out the filters. I'll let you know.

Last night, after everyone left the garage, I pulled it in the oil change bay and put it up on the lift. I could see a couple leaks in the differentials, and the rear tranny seal is leaking. I think the front seal may be leaking as well. So, I pressure washed the bottom of the truck to clean all the oil leaks off. Today I should be able to see where those issues are and set a plan to fix them.

On a brighter side, the bottom frame is amazing. I have never seen one so solid. There is not ever surface rust. The only rust I have found is under the driver and passenger seat supports. The forward part of the battery tray is rusted through, and a patch has been pop riveted to the seat support and front drivers floor. Both are easy patch weld candidates.

I'll post in the resto section my work on this. It is too nice to tear it down and sandblast. It does not look like this MUTT has ever been disassembled.

There is no body tag on the inside of the drivers tranny tunnel. It appears to be an early A2, with full emissions. Does any one have info on where to look for a body tag? I'm pretty sure it is an AMG, so no BUDD tag either.

No tag there. That is the first place I looked.

If it has emissions then it is definitely an AMG so that would be the only place.75 and later.
