Unread post by bralos » September 12th, 2017, 3:50 pm

Looking at buying what I think is a M151A2 the numbers on plate under hood is ORD 11639799 BUDD S/N # 20668. Has no title and runs. Heavily modified and would like to know more about it before I make a offer.

Thanks

Bralos.... that ORD should read 11639700. The BUDD number indicates a Ford-built M151A2 delivered around May 1971.

Yea I fat fingered it, should have been 00 at end. No title, any idea how hard to get replacement? Also someone added a 2nd rear axle to this one. Hope to get deal worked out with seller and climb under and see what I have to work with. I have CJ2a and CJ3a already. I am sure the 2nd axle will make the purists flip out :>

Bralos....

I'm here in England - UK so I'm not best-placed to advise on getting a title. And it seems that different States have differing title requirements....but I'm sure someone on this board will chime in....if you let us know whereabouts you are located.

And if you post some pictures, we may be able to help even more (hint, hint) :D :D :D

What you have is generally called a stumpjumper. A lot of people made them and the name came from the ones that were made by TnJ Murray. Getting a title for that is going top be tough because it is far from a standard or stack vehicle. A lot depends on what state you are in.

What state are you in?

No title is the seller's problem when it comes to setting a price and it can be a heck of a bargaining point for you because typically, you're going to drop not less than $400 in the process of getting a title.

However, that is only the case if the seller gives consideration to the probability that a prospective buyer intends to put it on the street. He may be thinking that the only thing anyone is going to do with it is bomb around off-road in which case he'll wait for someone who intends to do only that.

Actually having a serial number is the only real starting point in a titling process when no title is offered by the seller (and that wouldn't include the body tag numbers, by the way.) In Texas, the circumstance you present would most likely require going through the process of titling it as an assembled vehicle but again, there is a problem - that being that the process requires receipts for the major components.

So here's what you should do. First, post pictures here so you can get the best idea what this truck is from the readership, though Ken has probably already nailed it. You may even find that the members of the G (who are exceptionally good at spotting the tiniest details) may give it the thumbs down from a the perspective of mechanical or body issues.

Then, go to a tax office (where you get your plates) and start by offering no specifics but only asking the simplest, most basic question. That being, How do I title a vehicle whose title has been lost where the owner presents only a bill of sale? They will tell you what to do and if you are lucky and happen to live in a state where the process is quite forgiving you might be able to get through it with no dramas. If otherwise, it may be your best bet to pass on it.

Aside from the rather unique qualities you've described, there are plenty of MUTTs out there. It might be in your best interests to seek out one elsewhere. If the price is unbelievably rock bottom, buy it and use it for parts or enjoy it within the limitations of a vehicle that you cannot put on the street.

Cheers,
TJ

Stumpjumpers were not really built for the street. Unless that rear section was welded on perfectly in alignment then you might have at best extreme tire wear and at worse it will be impossible to control above 25 MPH.

Here in Okla, you can do a title 42. It's basically a mechanics lien. Here's a link so you can get an idea of what we can do.
