From that photo alone I must say those gears don't look too badly pitted.

I was going to say the same thing. Get a couple gallons of muriatic acid and dump in there and get a rebuild kit for the bearings and syncros and good to go. Or if you want to go cheap get the really strong commercial vinegar, That will take a while longer but hey, leave it in the shed for a month and drain it out and fill it with oil.

Looks like the closest Home Depot or the dreaded "store that shall not be named" is in Olathe About $8 per gallon.

Safety First! The green makes "less" fumes but they both make quite a bit. Use in a well ventilated area!

Can also usually find at pool/spa places.

Picture of it used over on the g503.... http://forums.g503.com/viewtopic.php?t=181090

Picked up one gallon. Need 2, like suggested. Man that gives off some nasty fumes. cough, cough.

How long do you think I should let this transmission soak in muriatic acid, without hurting it ?

I use it to clean old ford cast carbs and it works great...but you need to rinse very well and soda water is a good idea. then fill with used motor oil till you need it....if it sets 3 or 4 hours it should sparkle .....

I've used it for heads and engine parts that were rusted out. Time depends on how bad, but 4 hours to a couple days should do most.

Wear chem resistant gloves, and either hold your breath, or wear a mask. Just the fumes will tingle your skin. It's strong stuff.... and it will eat up your concrete floor if you spill it.

It will only attack the rust on steel and leave the good metal alone but on carburetors you need to dilute it pretty heavily since it will eat aluminum down to nothing.

On my 151, the body had rust all over major sections, so I thought how am I going to submerge it in the muriatic acid? So I prepped the areas, took a paint brush/squirt bottle to apply it, kept it wet for whatever time the bottle said.I don't remember how successful I was, then I rinsed it with the water hose, dried it with the blow gun air hose, put PORS-15 on it.
