That thing is NICE! The only thing I did not like about them was manual steering that was very heavy at low speed. To convert to power you had to find a box from either a 76 or 77 and they dried up years ago.

that's very good looking. just as a matter of curiousity on my part, are they also a 24 volt system? do they also have a shielded ignition system, like the M151's?

I never saw a 880 radio truck. What did it have for a battery system? hopefully not the 12 on 12 nightmare the CUCV's use. I have worked on many of the regular cargo versions which are basically a stripped green dodge w250 pick up.

Rick, the 880s with a tactical FM radio mount (RT-524 usually) had the radio mounted in a rack that was located at the front of the pickup bed, just behind the cab back wall. Yes, they had a similar 12/12 volt battery system as CUCV. They were temperamental starters (that Dodge thing....) and they absolutely guzzled MOGAS. Only thing thirstier I encountered was a gasser M88 VTR.

Dodges as a whole were never good for gas mileage. Did they still use the 12 volt starter on the radio rigs? The ones we had where I worked , which is a college, were got for like 50.00 each from DRMO and we put plows on them. Think armstrong steering on steroids!!! You needed steroids to steer the damn things with the plow hanging up there. Those were all 12 volt and standard off the shelf parts. Those 318's ran forever though, the only problem I would have is the ballast resister which they thoughtfully put right under the back of the hood so when you opened it to check the oil all the water and snow that gathered in those big recess's in the hood would run right on the resistor. I kept a half dozen in stock.

On the M882 (shelter carrier) The 24v system is separate from the 12v portion. I assume that was one of the normal methods.
Had a 12v alternator and batter running the truck, lights, normal stuff. Then also had a 24v alternator with two seperate batteries that ran the 24v radios/shelter. So if you sucked the life out of the 24v system the truck would still start and drive.

It is a heavy method (three big batteries, and two alternators) but it doesn't have all of the electrical hooey like the CUCVs.

I also have seen reference to a 24v converter box that charges a 24v battery bank for one radio in 880 series trucks. That second method sounds like a poor solution to the problem but probably works to keep your PRC-77 and AM-2060 running.

Now if that were a 725 or M43 I would go for the deal. I am looking for something full size but not in the 5 ton range. Deuces have gotten crazy in price and I refuse to pay it. Not looking for something with super armstrong steering though, been there, done that with the 880's. The 725's steer nice, they have that nice big steering wheel.

the ambulance rick is quite a bit easyer to steer than a standard 880 vehicle with no load in the back end.. and as far as a bigger steering wheel.. there is no room left for one of them any more.. seats are taller now I think.... lol
