WTB: M28 Davy Crockett Parts and pieces

Post by Austringer » September 3rd, 2013, 8:58 am

Looking for any and all parts related to the Davy Crockett system (M28) for the M151D or M151A1D (most were same as M38A1D). I have a few parts and pieces but looking for the tripod, barrel sections, breech for spotting rifle (have uncut barrel) and any other parts. Have complete T&E system, just need rest.

Had never heard of one of those.

Short-range (yikes) tactical nuke.

For others like me...

I knew about them, I just didn't know that they continued in service into the G838 era. With this, the rifle carrier all you'll need is the TOW version & you will have all three of the (heavy) armaments carrier M151s 8)

crappy shot, but it's a straight 151. :-) Really don't have that much interest in the TOW system, don't know why, guess it feels way too modern.

these were also deployed on m113 APC's. I think the military finally gave up on them when they realized nobody was stupid enough to actually fire one. the range was only 6 or 7 miles, while it had a blast radius of about 20 miles for radiation effects, shock wave etc. Pretty much suicide if you fire it.

Yeah, & in those last pic's especially... looks like those were "short fused" suicide firing positions. "just point at window and fire" then you don't have to worry about counting "one one thousand - two one thousand - three one thousand" boom !
Leave it up to the rocket scientists to design something that would only shoot 6 or 7 miles, then kill everything in a 20 mile radius....
That's like sending a guy down into the sewer's around the mangrove swamps with a carbide flashlight...LOL.
But it does look really cool on an M151...

Link to Wikis and videos (below). Certainly a bad idea of a weapon for a wide variety of reasons. Doesn't though seem to be immediately lethal to the operators. Yes the operators could, given wind conditions, be affected by the fall out (especially if they don't move post firing the weapon). I'm no scientist, I just read the Wikis and watched the videos, but at 10-20 tons yield (TNT) we are not talking about a blast effect like a strategic nuclear device. Wikis outlined that the instantly lethal blast radius was ~500 ft. and those within ~1/4 mile of the blast would likely receive a fatal dose. Effective projectile range was up to 3 miles so we can all do the math. On paper the crews should be "safe" but weather conditions/wind were the wildcard for non-lethal radiation exposure.
