Unread post by bhm1jvg » September 29th, 2016, 11:55 pm

I want to buy a towbar for my M151. Any out there and what would you want for it?

Barter system accepted! I have some extra 151 stuff you might need.

unless you just specifically want an issue tow bar, any good welding shop can make one for you as a custom job. i had the guys in our shop make one for me, and they had it done in no time.i designed it to fit right where the front shackles and pins are. once it was in the slot, and the pin was back in, it dropped onto my truck hitch and away we went. given the price of issue gear, you might wish to consider this.

And given the weight of a military medium tow bar, which is the one you are looking for. They are hefty suckers!

I have seen 1 on Ebay listed a Military Tow Bar. Its an IBIS - military style but not military. Looks good though. I can get one made at the Tech School. I know the welding instructor.

Aren't there some issues with flat towing the M151's? I remember reading something about that in the TMs.

Steering tends to want to turn full lock if it goes to far around. The solution is to limit the turning radius by putting bunji's on the steering wheel. That way the front tires still turn but not all the way.

I have the military tow bar with the correct feet for the Mutt. I would be happy to sell it but as Rick said....its HEAVY! Pickup is likely the only option....

That is a damn good price, especially with all of the attachments. Might even make up for the shipping.

It is a good price. I have seen the feet from $65 to $189 by themselves. I agree with you Rick, it is way more Tow Bar than I need for my MUTT.

Both of my younger brothers are Welders and have there own shops. One of them will make me a replica - on a little smaller scale. I will post pics when done. I grew up in my Dad's Welding shop as well but have spent the last 30 years behind a desk for a very large Transportation Company - UPS. I still have the ability just don't have the equipment. My wife is OK for now with 2 "Investments" in her garage, if I start bringing in Welders and cutting torches......................

Rick,

If I bought the one on Ebay, does anyone need the large feet and the axle mounts? I could recover some of my moneybag selling those parts. They are probably not very sought after, or are they?

You might want to hold onto them in case you ever have the need to tow another military vehicle be it yours or even someone elses. Or if you decide to sell the tow bar they will add substantial value to the sale.

THe axle clamps arent worth much based on what I have seen. The large feet(1") however fit a CUCV(as well as other vehicles) so they are quite sought after.
