WTB good used ignition coil FOUND

Unread post by paracord » July 19th, 2017, 9:09 am

Anyone have a good used ignition coil they would part with?

Originals are hard to find and pricey, shiny Chinese are junk, someone has t/o distributors on ebay for $100 but then you are taking a chance on the coil, expect to pay $150 for a NOS coil.

I have a couple of Us made used take outs. They did work when taken out, but no idea how to check them now. If you need one still, shoot me a PM.

I'm thinking a coil going bad for it runs good one day and crappie for a little while and then runs great again.

If the coil is bad then when it stats to run bad it will not improve unless you shut it off and let it cool for a few minutes. It will repeat this pattern over and over usually for a shorter run time each time until it eventually dies. One of the classic symptoms is driving down the road and you lose power and get backfires from the exhaust as it fires and no fires. For the price of the coil you might want to do a good diagnosis on it to be sure what the problem is. Have you done a complete tune up on it including plugs and valve adjustment and timing? Does it have points? If so what is their condition and the condensor?

New plugs, valves adjusted and for the life of me cannot find a timing mark on the 3 belt crank pulley. Has electronic ignition. Will still like to have a spare coil for the road even if the one in it is good. That's what it does runs like crap and cools down and runs better but not every time. That is why I was thinking coil.

Could be, I keep several of the Chinese ones on hand no matter what people say about them. I have one In my M37 that has been doing good in there since I got it running a while ago and I know a few people running them with no problems. I also know a few who have had them fail right out of the box so it is a crapshoot with them. I just found a place that is advertising 12 volt M series coils so I am pretty sure the M37 is going to be converted. Maybe even the 151, I am NOT going to be paying 100.00 for coils that last a couple months! I'll get rid of the vehicle first.

Wouldn't it be possible to put a resistor in series with the coil primary to allow a 12V coil run in a 24V vehicle?

It would but the problem is finding a coil that fits into the distributor correctly. And that would have to be a pretty hefty ballast resistor! I am toying with the idea of using a MSD capacitive discharge ignition system on 12 volt with the 24 volt coil. It should work well since the unit bumps up the voltage going to the positive side of the coil to around 460 volts but drops the amperage way down.

George, The link you show has a price of 95.00 Euros. (American keyboards don't have a euro symbol)

Are you saying that Reomie is having more of those shiny coils made? But with better quality?

Blake @ Red River told me he had some new coils, maybe they will turn out to be ok, I'm going over tomorrow, might pick one up.
