Wanted: 12V starter

Looking for an original M151 starter that is waterproof and converted to 12V. I know RAPCO stocked these a while back. They are waiting for the next shipment to arrive, and don't know if it will be a month or a year.

There are a number of shops that can do this. I don't know the prices...I bet it is cheaper just to buy a extra battery and keep it 24 volt.

Of the ten mutts I’ve bought over the past 4 years, 5 of them were converted to 12v. It’s a real pain to put them back to 24v, but it all seems to work better that way.

Must be nice having owned over 10 Mutts. I can't find one for sale in Kansas/Missouri.

Still looking for a 12V starter.

I don't own a Mutt. I'm building a Jeep with the Mutt drivetrain. My winches, fan, lights etc are all 12V. My local Amish guy can't convert the starter, and I'm about ready to paint/assemble the Jeep. It would be funny to have it finished but have to pull start it every time I hit the trail!

One had a totally fried starter. Two had no starters, and the other two had a second battery for the starter, powered using a solenoid and 12v switch.

I found my last, and best one off a St Louis Craigslist ad last summer. They are out there.

I would like to see some pictures of this build. I don't think it is possible with a solid front and rear axle. hmmmm

hi

if you can not find a 12volt starter you can use a serie paralell relais
it takes two battery`s they are standing paralell 12 volt if you not start (also better for the winch)
if you star the battery`s go at serie 24 volt to the starter 1 2volt for the rest of the car

You have me real interested George. I am having a hard time grasping the theory behind this though. Do you have a diagram showing the entire charging and starting setup and where the accessory loads hook in? I can understand how it connects the two batteries and sends 24 volts to the starter BUT, How is that 24 volts broken down for the return to the batteries? You are going to have a 12 volt imbalance in the entire system due to the overvoltage on the ground side trying to go back to a 12 volt parallel battery system. The only way to overcome this would be an isolated ground starter leading back to the 24 volt side of the switch would it not?

Or change the 24v Alternator for a 12v unit ??

That was a given, the main holdup for a complete 12 volt conversion seems to be the starter. Georges idea would be fantastic but for the fact that 24 volts out has to have a return path for 24 volts. As the starter is grounded to the engine block along with all the other electrical accessories which we are going to assume for this example are all converted to 12 volt.
