hi

the switch put the two battery`s at parallel the load is at both and all other users wen the engine runs
during start it switch over to series one battery give the car the 12 volt
only the starter gets 24 volts
the only thing is a mutt has not a starter relays this must be added
there are several US and Canadian trucks with this system

Thanks George, I knew you would not let me down and had this covered. Well, That would complete the 12 volt conversion of the M-151 using available parts so I am no longer going to be buying 100 dollar or above coils or Chinese ignition modules. When it comes down to it I will use a Chevrolet 10si alternator, for charging the same two batteries I have now. I will use points in the distributor for a trigger for a MSD-6 capacitive discharge ignition system and run the stock coil or Chinese 24 volt coil on that. It uses high voltage, very low amperage to fire the coil so any of the coils should last a very long time. Along with the relay above that George mentioned for the starter working off of the original batteries the foot starter switch can be eliminated and a discreet starter button put somewhere, or the switch can be used as a trigger for a starter relay so you still have the original look and feel.

After calling a bunch of major businesses in the US, I have found it is "impossible" to convert the starter to 12V. At least I mean nobody has access to available parts. Of course there may be oddball parts that might fit, but no computer systems have found any crossing part numbers. The company RAPCO was having build new starters went out of business.

The parallel switch is a great idea, but the manufacturer strongly urged to not submerge their product. At the end of the day, this mutli-voltage system just isn't worth it.

However - I'm not going down yet. New plan: Find a brand new 12V starter that will work on the Mutt, and I'm sure I'll need to machine an adapter plate. Even if I end up ruining 3 starters I would be out cheaper than buying an extra Optima battery, parallel switch, etc.

Nick, send me an e-mail, I think I lost you address. I have some info for you. You can build a pretty much waterproof case for the electrics. You are not going to be submerging this thing for hours, all you need to do is keep water out of the solenoid.

Sent you a text Rick.

Just got to thinking. Would the starter spin fast enough on 12V to work just fine? It would be like the old school 6V starters, which did the job on the F-head Willys engine. I could even install an ether injection kit to give it a little extra "boom" to fire up. It would be a neat feature, and leaves me open for a direct install of a 12V starter if one of the old RAPCO ones ever popped up. Not to mention I would be using a normal 24V Mutt starter that could be easily replaced when broken.

Nope, once it gets down to around 18 volts it is done.

I don't own a Mutt. I'm building a Jeep with the Mutt drivetrain. My winches, fan, lights etc are all 12V. My local Amish guy can't convert the starter, and I'm about ready to paint/assemble the Jeep. It would be funny to have it finished but have to pull start it every time I hit the trail!

Crank starter like the old Model T's and tractors. He has tried all of the starter and generator places around his area and nobody can do it. I think the problem is that going from 24 volt to 12 volt which involve going to heavier wiring normally. But I think these starters have plenty heavy enough wiring to begin with, the outfits are just not looking at them.

That is enough! I know Nick, I have talked to him at length. He and his father own a very successful business. It is not mutt related so of no concern here. I will not tolerate personal attacks or comments degrading people. PERIOD!
