WTB: NOS Vinyl Doors and Side Curtains

Unread post by Rainman » August 10th, 2008, 8:41 pm

Looking for a NOS set of doors and side curtains. Must be the grayish green, not Marine green, brownish green or tan. All or part of the set is good. Just piecing together an new set to put away for the future. :D

I can tell you that the ones Murray has are not matched, They are close but not a perfect match. I have never seen all pieces matched unless it was canvass.

murrays advertises them as being all green, or all tan, thats as close as you're gonna match anything military.... there's always slight variations in shade. All the vinyl panels on mine match pretty close....

There are 4 distinct colors of vinyl for the M151 with the more recent addition of the tan. I have a nearly complete used set of the green ones. NOS doors and side curtains in green turn up once in awhile on ebay, but the the green top I have is in not too good condition. Have reason to believe the brighter green ones maybe were Marine issue but had some issue in the Army too. I have a top thats a mixed repair with green and gray/green panels and looks like crap. Also have a NOS brownish green pass side curtain if anyone is trying to put a set of those together. Those might be some of the very early vinyl for late A1's and early A2's The grayish green ones were the mid and later issue most common to locate in NOS these days. Many faulty and poor quality vinyl tops were refused by the govt on delivery, and ended up in the after-market inventories early on. Think they were a "Native American" contract that went bad. All the radio tops I have ever seen were in the gray/green vinyl. Over the years I've seen complete sets of all, but after-market tan tops I seldom see. I have NOS some of everything but tan,so I'll try to get some pictures and post for all to compare them side by side. Most of the 4 colors matches pretty close to their sets, but if mixed are obviously different from each other. And I'm just lookin for the easy ones! :)

There's four colors commonly found on M151 vinyl tops and side curtains, theres the early brownish/od green, a much brighter marine corps green, the later greyish/green, and desert tan. Mostly what you see is the later grayish/green shade. if you mix the usmc and army pieces, it really looks messed up.... of course then there are slight variations in dye lots with different manufacturers, so you can get close, but never actually match perfectly.... mine, being an A2, has the later grayish/green shade top and doors/side curtains... here's an example of what happens when you mix the colors...

Here's the picture TX...

Image

Pretty much self explanatory from the previous posts. In the lower part of the pic at 5 oclock, is a small tab of a piece of gray/green top that has a slight color variation from the large center door panel, but their pretty close. Sorry I have no tan available to complete the color wheel :D

Here's another one showing tall 4 pieces of NOS vinyl.

There must be someone other than me with a vinyl soft top OCD. There's loads of this stuff as single pieces laying around in warehouses, closets and sheds. I just try to put them together for my own enjoyment. It's like collecting baseball cards! :D

Hey TX,

Don't get me wrong here, these are not the official military names for these colors, just my interpretation of the variations. :) But yep, you got it, accept for the little triangle that is a gray/green top with the slight batch variation down at 5 oclock. I have no idea why each variant was produced, I'm just a student of my own observations. And I don't think it's "Dark Green", its just "more green".

Anybody got a NOS pass door and/or side curtains? Guess I have a NOS drivers door in the picture so strike that one!

Saw a brown/green top walking around at Hallsville, but the new owner had it under his arm by the time I saw it. Still looking for the grey/green side curtains and pass door. Old Kenny had 4 green pass doors there too, but somebody grabbed them up for $5 ea before TX could get her cash out of her pocket. Better luck next time TX!
