Transmission input shaft - takeout poor condition

Unread post by Bart1015 » April 16th, 2016, 4:11 pm

I am looking for an out of speck (ready for the scraper) transmission input shaft. I will just be using it to align the clutch plate while my engine is out. Only part that needs to be usable is the splines for the clutch and the pilot shaft which fits into the flywheel.

If you have one collecting rust waiting to go to the recycler, please keep me in mind.

Thanks

The plastic ones from most any auto parts store are pretty cheap. Why not get one of those? Would be cheaper than shipping.

You will never find one with the right diameter and spline count. I have probably 25 different ones and not one will fit.

Brett, During my restoration, I had my engine and bell housing hanging from an engine hoist. I lowered it until I eyeballed what part two of this is and tied it down so it did not wiggle. I then strapped the tranny to my floor jack with a ratchet strap. very carefully I pushed the tranny into position and used the jack handle to make minute adjustment. No muscle strain trying to wiggle it in. Took several adjustment, but it went. I made the approximate adjustments to the rotation of the tranny spines to mate with the clutch. Kevin.

You still have to line up the clutch plate before bolting down the pressure plate and that has to be done before sliding the transmission on so the clutch has to be aligned with the tool first. That being said I have been known to leave the pressure plate bolts a bit loose so the disc will slide and that way I can get the transmission in easier once the splines are engaged. The disc will move around a bit and allow the pilot bearing to align. You have to be careful with this method or you can screw up the pilot bearing. It has to go in perfectly straight. Then you can tighten the pressure plate, this now involves rotating the engine several times as you tighten the bolts in rotation.
