Big Boy's Toys

Unread post by m3a1 » June 8th, 2017, 10:35 pm

With the Alley Cat project complete and the car show coming up this weekend and a parade the following weekend I decided to keep my options WAY open by pulling Big Dog out of his hole and give him a bath and a once over. He's a 1966 Kaiser Jeep M109A3.

You simply cannot have something this size and not own a power-washer! They didn't make enough quarters to wash one of these and they don't fit in the carwash anyhow. Lichen was growing on my truck. LICHEN! I am SO ashamed.

In his hole, idling and building up air. Heavens, that buzzer is noisy! This truck hasn't been run in some time and he fired right up. Ni-i-i-i-ice! 8)

Big Dog and Little Dog (MUTT) aka 'Booger". The dynamic duo. Dig that awesome slobber tube! It's so BLUE I just can't bring myself to paint it.

Loping at idle for the first twenty minutes or so, it finally smoothed out. Time to get some fresh fuel, I reckon. What I have in there has Seafoam in it, mixed to the proper proportions but I suppose even that has limits.

A quick walk-around revealed a seeping wheel cylinder at the right front and a tiny, whiney little air leak somewhere down by the air tanks. It resonates so I'll be looking into that leak tomorrow when I drain the tanks and maybe even install a new glad-hand on the right rear. That's a job that has been waiting forever! It's so good to see Big Dog out in the driveway.

This truck is FOUR years older than the MUTT and ever so much prettier!

Cheers,
TJ

I wanted one of them in the worst way years ago when they were surplussing them out. figured the 1200.00 price was not bad but could not find the "right" one.I wanted a winch truck. Then they dried up overnight.

I went without the winch (obviously). The winch makes parallel parking nearly impossible.

So let me get this straight. You have a Big Dog, Little Dog, and an Alley Cat? They say we have to be a little looney to own these things... I think Spike, Chester, and Sylvester would be fitting.

NEWS FLASH! Big Dog has a case of the clap.

Bacteria in the fuel system! Oh Noooooooooooo!

Happily, modern diesel fuel doesn't smell like old fashioned diesel. Still, I think I"m just gonna take these clothes out back and set em on fire (without me in em!)

Throw some biocide in there.

I drained the tank and set the first two 5 gallon buckets of fuel aside with the idea that what was lowest in the tank was most likely contaminated the worst. In fact, this fuel looks darker somehow. Then I put 10 gallons of fresh fuel into the tank with enough biocide (FPPF Killem) for 35 gallons and I put the remaining 25 gallons of fuel that I drained back in on top of that.

In the first two buckets I drained, the fuel looked darker somehow but that may just be my imagination because it was a very long day and I was tired and hacked off at having to deal with this and the cantankerous MUTT. I put some biocide in one of the first two buckets last night and as yet, I haven't gone out to see what the results were.

The biocide should kill the bacteria and leave a coating of dead black garbage at the bottom of the tank. Will not really hurt anything but on a tank that big I would get a 3/8 or 1/2 hose and start a siphon and just vacuum the stuff of the bottom.

I definitely loved my truck. But was the only one in the family so I could not share my joy and it had to go

LOVE the winch! And funny that you should say that. No one in my family has ever really warmed up to this big truck either, even after all the years of our having it. I guess it's the size that's so imposing. It does take some getting used to being around something like that. And, of course if it won't run for some reason, you had better have your act together (and your wallet) because it's going to be about 16,000 lbs of dead weight.

Just saw this on CL ...

1953 Willy's jeep M38 A1 Runs great, clean title, it is a military jeep in very good condition for a 1953, needs starter and a set of tires, It has a wench and a rear heater, This is a M38 A1 military jeep.

Thought about it briefly.... I can't hardly keep up with the one I have now much less two. :D (Don't tell her I said that!)

Go for it, man! (I'm what you'd call "an enabler") Having two means almost always having spare parts!
