True, a near death experience but that's not a ditch. That was a chasm to hell starting to open up. When Ol Scratch  heard 12B was coming to fix his attitudinal problem, he shut that point of entry quick, fast, and in a hurry. :D

Well, I hope you're okay but I'm rather sure you have at least a few bumps. What are your injuries?

loaded trailer , abou 15- 20 MPH ,sharp curve , no curve sign , down a steep grade ,fresh rock on top of sandstone slabs, hit the brakes a touch ,started to slide ,let up ,trailer pushed her around and they we go. A 4 wheel drive Ford was spinning going up the hill ,slick as snot. It was like being on ice, nothing I could do.

15--20 MPH is how fast I turn a corner in town, on a highway curve maybe 40MPH.So the trailer is the key factor in that it pushed the mutt over in a down hill turn?I see it is an A2 which I thought had more stability than a 151?

Any short, narrow wheelbase vehicle can roll easily if it gets sliding sideways. All you need is something to obstruct a low side wheel or in this case the ditch where the low side sliding wheels went even lower and that put the center of gravity over the limit. If the rivets broke on the rim then that would have had the same effect of lowering the low side and the center of gravity. The only time I have ever seen broken rivets on a wheel is in severe crashes or really rusty rims.

There is something else to be learned here, a trailer with a heavy load will push the towing vehicle and when you hit the brakes it is going to unload the rear suspension and that in turn will lock the rear tires. Hence the rear end is going to come around. I never understood why they didn't add service brakes to the 416 like they did to the 116 trailers.

Any mountain dirt road is that way but the ones with shale rock are just plain evil. Had a ton of those roads where I used to live. They are even more fun in the winter covered in snow and ice. you start sliding you do your best to hit the wall on the high side before you get enough momentum to bounce off and go over the side with no bottom. At least if you hit the wall it slows you down and there is deep snow there to get a grip on. You flatlanders would be in trouble in the mountains!

Dan, if you were there in 78 watching the race you may have seen me in a Chenowith buggy! Running dual Weber 44 carbs and by the time I got to the top it was running so rich it would not idle but came in second in class. It took a few minutes for the crew to get me out of the seat, my butt had a firm grip on the seat pad!!!!!! Try that hill at close to 100 MPH! In a buggy with no weight on the front and massive understeer. You didn't want to use the cutting brakes at that speed because it could trow you around and off backwards. Of coarse that was the first year for the Quattro and that made everyone look like turtles!
