MUTT on Morocco trails...

Unread post by mwmutt » December 27th, 2007, 2:48 pm

Hello happy Mutters, for the new year and the birthday of this new net site dedicaced to the MUTT, receive my best wishes with some pictures from my last trip of 3000 km during 12 days in Morocco accross the tough and stony trails of the Atlas mountains and the Jebel Sagrho. The independent suspension of the Mutt is an avantage compare to the rigid Willys MB...

Whoa!!! Now that certainly qualifies as taking the MUTT out for a little ride. MW, welcome to the site and thanks for sharing those fantastic pictures.

Did you take a ferry across the Mediterranean or did you install the DEEP water fording kit and drive it :?:

The last picture in the rain/snow looks like a really miserable ride! That had to be cold.

Thanks for your comments. Just some information about this trip and the preparation of the vehicle
-The Morocco and the Tunisia (particulary for the sand dunes where I was in 2006 with my Willys) are the paradise for the french jeepers. But to the 3000 km off road on site, you must adjust 2000 km on road between Paris and Sêtes, the harbour for the embarqment with ferry to Tanger (a cruise of 36 h in each way). In total, it's about 5000 km and 3 weeks delay.

-The preparation is classic: check and change if necessary, the vital components:
.Zenith carb test by Ken, our great Muttguru!
.New: fuel and water pumps, fan belts, spark plugs, shocks absorber,
.Check/grease: bearings wheels, axle shaft and transmission, radiator, brakes+ DOT liquid
.engine: W20-50 for engine, W80-90 for transmission, and W140 for differential
.and retighten all screw and bolts... do'nt forget, you will be on rocky trails all the time...

-special preparation
. new radial tires 700x16 Uniroyal T9 from the french military jeep Peugeot P4. They are larger than the US Military NDCC (you drive only on 3 cm...). Inflate about 2 kg on trail and 0-8-1kg on sand.
.Thermostat out
.grill in front of the radiator and the lights againts the projection of stone
. special adaptation on carb from Vittorio Boccalate (MIL-Plus) which overhauled and give more nervousity.

-Problems
.Breake down of one U joint on right front axle which have been change by a new coming from the OBLIGATORY spare parts stock in a canteen on the rear on the Mutt (fuel and water pumps, carb, hoses for radiator, fuel and brake lines, spark plugs, shocks, wheels bearings, U joint for axles and shafts, coil, electronic module for distributor, lights, tools, etc.)
. small oil leak on one side seal of rear differential

+ of the MUTT in compare with the WILLYS: confort with the independant suspension, rapidity to use the front transfert when you must have the 4x4 (just push the lever)
- of the MUTT in compare with the WILLYs: the canvas top and bow assembly; it's so long to install that I prefer to stay in the rain with my parka... In october in Atlas, you have some sudden storms with the "oued" which pass from 0 to 50 cm in few minutes... see the third picture above.

It's finish! I hope for you the same pleasure that I have with my two "mistress": the first and the last US military Jeeps.
P.S.: sorry for my english

great pics and thanks for posting the details. too
where did you get your m151? been looking around here in france for ages for one but no luck.
I know of only one other m151, an a2, here, un gendarme, je crois, l'avait, mais j'ai perdu contact avec lui il y a 2 deux ans
I have a place in the south of france where i am now, near grasse, also in Paris but rarely go there. Are you nearby?
I get back the the US every 2 months or so - if you need any help with bringing back parts, let me know.

MW: Thanks for sharing all the information. Seems like the MuttGuru is everywhere, glad he was involved with your operation. Sounds like it’s similar to the Camel race, do they do this every year?

Top, you were talking about Mutts in France and maybe MW has dealt with these people. The fellows name is Philippe Clodore and he is located close to Lille in Bavay. Try this link.
