Unread post by 42GPW » June 14th, 2010, 11:33 pm

i came home from a long day picking up a 42 willys. and walking around a salvage yard of military vehicles. When i got home the boys were decked out in there Nam gear and asking for a ride. we went out to the back of the property and just as i stopped a UH-1H Huey flew over. Good time for a photo op. To bad the huey was so high. Oh well heres the pic. Hope you enjoy.

Well that picture is my answer to most people when they ask "how did you get into this?" I just say "I played Army to much when I was a kid." :D Then I go into the whole patriotic / Americana thing... Veterans events.... supporting our country.
My kids have a much better respect for this country than most of their friends. Its obvious why.... Stuff like you and your kids do... preserving history with memories and fun events that mean something. Every time my kids put on a uniform to fit the vehicle we were driving, I would explain the what’s and whys of the period in history they were portraying. I love this hobby :D :D :D

We had an opportunity 2 years ago when we went home to southern California to visit home. We actually drove into Phoenix to visit more family and ended up at the mall. Sitting down in one of the mall chairs was an old Indian gentleman wearing a Navaho code talker hat. I went up to him and asked him if he was a code talker and he said yes. I then thanked him for his service and asked him if my boys could meet him. He agreed. He saw the camera hanging from my wifes arm and said lets get a picture. We have lost the digital photo since then. But it was a great example to our boys how to thank a Veteran. From that day on they do it on there own. Its great to see them taking on an interest.

Hey Matt,
Priceless picture. One for the photo album for sure. I have an 8mm home movie from the 50's that has some of my childhood friends and I marching and playing Army when I was about 3 yrs old. Little did we know that years later at least 3 of the six kids in the formation had served on active duty with the same American ideals we learned as children. Setting a good example is more important than trying to teaching a kid patriotism. That part they learn on themselves. I stood and said my pledge of allegiance in school, and knew what I was saying from a very young age. Keep up the good work there Matt, your obviously doing a fantastic job bringing history to life in the eyes of those boys.

OUTSTANDING, that is a great pic. Please post the rest!!!! I have been a Vietnam historian for a long time. While at a airsoft event, I met up with two young boys who are also interested in Vietnam War history. Since then we got together and started the Vermont Vietnam Historical Group. This year is our first year together preserving the history. Memorial day this year we participated in a very larger parade and had a great reception from the public and some vietnam vets. One vet that we met was in a Civil War Confederate unit and he felt honored as I was his EVER FIRST "welcome home"

On the way home we stopped at a local sand pit and took some pics.
