OK, Considering the above picture shows the plane taxiing on the front engine with the rear engine off I am real curious. I have a couple of ideas that involve cavitation of the rear prop because of propwash from the front but that is a WAG. So what is the pilot of said above plane doing wrong?

In the "push-pull" configuration you do not get a yawing movement when you lose an engine, nor can you tell by ear since the front engine is so noisy. In the case of a military aircraft like the O-2, with a load of rocket pods and minigun pods etc., It will most likely not get off the ground unless it had both engines running at max throttle. So, you always start the rear engine first, so you can hear the engine, and on takeoff advance the rear throttle first so you can hear and feel if the engine is still there and running. Then advance the front throttle and release the brakes.... I know some of you will say just look at the instruments and you should know, but I wouldn't want to count on them, they were made by the lowest bidder just like everything else military.

Jim, great explanation. Figured you'd know.
Wait till Seabee reads this string, he'll be sure to ask about the red button.
I was stationed at Bien Hoa, a USAF base 22 klicks NE of Saigon. They had the O-2 there, also the U-2 but thats another story.
Say come to think of it, I had a pretty nice room in the BOQ, I'll have to share some of that sometime.

i know the sledge hammer is off topic, but i have to tell you this--i've been in the glass business my whole adult life, minus my time in the army. our standard
line goes like this--"this is the glass business--if it can't be fixed with a hammer, it probably can't be fixed" . seabee, you'd probably fit right in and feel at home
from day one.bring your own hammer!

Is it Hoghton or Houghton tower?????? Our family is from england and I know we still hold the homestead. Would be nice to know that my relatives over there love military history.
