Nice video Ralph. I loved especially the "Mr. Nice" gun truck. That looked like a bad mofo.

The 3/4 ton gun trucks tended to get blown up easier than the 5 tons. That's me standing behind the .50 cal on the 5 ton "Uncle Meat". I used to refer to the gun trucks as "my office" back in the day.

I think gun trucks are facinating and scary all at the same time. For both sides. I can see the obvious harm they can rain down but seems the gunners are horribly exposed too. No turret protection can't be good when the rounds are coming inbound. It must have taken real huevos to stand behind that .50 when the sides of the gun truck were "tinging" with VC lead. I can't even imagine!

Rick: I had 14 years in the service and was the "old man" back then. Now, I'm ancient.

And it was because of the experience of the "old timers" that a lot of men are still here today. Tell me why it is that a ten year Sergeant can look at a patch of jungle and say "that trail is not safe" and he will then find an alternate route. Meanwhile the wet behind the ears Lt. will march right into the same patch of jungle and get cut to pieces. The Lt. would go "by the book" no matter what he was told where the Sergeant would say "screw the book" and find a better way. I guess the book doesn't tell you that it is pretty damn hard to accomplish the mission when all of your men are dead or wounded. I was one of the lucky ones with the "old timer" Sergeant. Plus he hated officers!
