The M-48 motor was a little smaller then the M-60 and didn't have turbos, the mufflers were mounted on top of the motor and exited out the rear through the louvered doors.

This is a M-48 power pack.

This is an empty haul, the gas tanks are on both sides.

Hey Mr Recovery,

Great Video, Pics= some Bad Memories!!!! Changing pacs!! Tight fit-ha ha, remember trying to remove the FINAL DRIVE collars!! Only us kids with skinny arms could reach the removal nut!
Info, the original early M48 gas burners had the exhaust on th outside-like the M47s. Rear did not have the louvered doors, just the top. These were real flame throwers :) Our M88s were all gas fired-we used them to heat up our diesel engines! Open the rear doors and remove the heat shield. Backed the M88 up to the M60 and put in a high idle. The Flames from an M88 would reach out 6 feet or more! There were some winters on the Rock, were this was the only way to start our tracks! The gas burners were easier to start. Even witht he purge heaters on it was a bad day for the Winter Mosquitoes-White Unburned diesel fuel :) Great pics Dan :) Oh how many times I crawed in and out of that engine compartment ! Point: early days in Nam, the first M48s sent were the gas burners. Mines and RPGS, forced to make a change to the diesel powered model. These were safer, but they still Cooked too! I lost mine, M60-C14. My legs were burnt from being in the driver compartment and the main gun to the front. It was tough for the drivers to get out, Gun to the front. Plus we always had our escape hatches wired shut. After C14 was Repaired, she cooked 2 weeks later to the ground. I was the Tc and the exhaust manifold cracked at the Turbos. The onboard extinguiser system failed to put out the engine compartment fire. My tank was engulfed in flames with 2 FULL Fuel tanks=gallons of fuel! Thank God we were not Combat loaded with ammo. This happened right inside a small German Village township square.
Sorry to ramble-Bad memories as a tanker.

I remember that the tankers were able to remove the engine and still connect it with extra harnesses to the tank itself. And then test run it. Was both impressive and frightening at the same time.

OK, So from what I gather from you guys is that the exhaust on all of them is out the rear. What were the flames in that video? Backfire through the carb. I would think the air cleaner would prevent that. Oil leak hitting exhaust?

Horst and Rick,

1st Horst: Yes, we could remove the power pack via the M88 recovery vehicle. Then it was lowered to the deck and ALL electrical, fuel etc was connected via quick disconect lines. We would run the pack, tests etc while on the ground. We would do this quarterly maintenance. A good tank crew and maintenance team could pull this pack out in less than an hour. We would change the engine oil and transmission oil while out of the vehicle.- M60 + M60a1
When i went on a TDY duty with a sister Bundeswer Panzer unit out of Wetzlar. They had the Leopard 1 -Mercedes benze engine-v10. They could pull there pack in 15 minutes-easy. Reason, they had screw out final Drives inside their sprockets. Ours -Tanker bar and a BFR-Rachet :) Impressive engine using RED OIL.

2nd: Rick, YES, the Later M48's and ALL the M60s exhaust came out the rear thru the Grated Combat Doors. The engines on the early gas burner m48's were backfires-injected i believe. Mr Recovery was in these EARLY ones, he can fully explain. I was in the later Diesel copys. Both vehicles AIR Cleaners were mounted on the side of the tank over the tracks, 2/3rds back, one on each side.
Yes, Tanks did have fuel, oils, grease etc in the Bildge. Thats why we pulled the packs and cleaned out the hulls. We did have large drains, but there was a baffle from the engine compartment to the turret. The life of a Tanker 1 hour of fun for 8 hours of maintenance.

5 Star General,

The pic that Mr recovery submitted of an early Strait M151. On the front Bumper was a GENERALS Flag-5 Star. This was 62-63 in Germany. The last 5 star I knew was Eisenhower. Long retired before 1962-63 ?? Dan, who was that General in the Lead Jeep ?

I forgot to add for Rick. Yes, the fuel lines could brake and spray over the turbos etc. The lines were armor flex, but if pinched they could spray fuel oil. The high demand by the injectors forced some serious fuel to those 12 cylinders. But, that fuel system was pretty safe, Gas system another story. But they had armored fuel lines as well. Just imagine how many gallons of MOGAS was behind that crew-scarry :)

A buddy of mine was a tanker in Germany in the late 60's. He would be hard to miss, 6'8" black guy. His name was Dave Williams. Just thought I would throw that out there in case anyone knew him.

Dave, from what I could find in the book it was, a visiting 5 Star British General, late 62 early 64 ? Their was no name given.

Your story's brought to mind 2 of my own that were not quite as bad as yours (not combat related) but hair raising at the time!
