Hey Ralph. that,s the 2nd mutt I,ve seen with those half doors. If you want too see a lot of mutts in a movie ,watch The Greem Berets with John Wayne. It,s been years since I saw that movie and didn,t realize there were so many mutts.I know kinda off topic.

The owner of the gun shop I used to frequent was stationed in Germany back in the 80s. He showed me quite a few pics with mutts in them. The ones with hard tops had half doors made out of plywood. What was real interesting was that all of the mutts & other US vehicles were sporting a digital camo paint scheme years or even decades before it came into vogue.

The other thing that sticks out in my mind was him telling me about the M60 MBTs in use with the Berlin Brigade. Even when the rest of the US Army went to a camo paint scheme for all of it's stuff the B.B.'s M60s still retained the old semi gloss OD w/white stars & stenciling. The tanks had a coat of wax applied to them that the crews had to maintain so they would always look sharp. It was the only time & place in his Military career that he'd ever seen an MBT with a coat of wax on it.

Plywood Doors-Standard in Germany ! In all my years stationed there in early 70's. ALL the units used these, was just the Norm over there. No ARMY combat units used the Hard tops during this time. Not to say some Generals jeep did not have one installed. The only ones I ever saw were Airforce Fac teams. And as far as the Berlin Brigade went: Their tanks Never went to the field ! They stayed in Berlin-spit shine boys! When they went to Hoenfells and Graf, they used tanks prepositioned there for the Berlin guys to use. Used to P-ss us other tankers off. They did not have to maintain them as they were RENTED tracks!

At one minute and ten seconds there is a tank slamming on the brakes and a lot of flame behind the turret. I would not think that was exhaust?

Yes Rick, it was exhaust, those were the M-48A2 MBT that were still using the V-12 air cooled Gas Engine's. In late 1962 we changed over to The M-60's with Diesel motors.

when I was in the service, and that was waaaay later, we still had the M48s with the gas engines. They were able to throw a flame of at least 3 feet long out of the exhaust...

Where did the exhaust exit on the M48? All I saw when I was in was M60's.
