I saved a little piece of WWII history

Well..usually an interesting new piece of military history follows me home..last couple of times;motorcycles...today was no different...I secured a section of a 16 inch barrel from the USS IOWA....recently gov liq auctioned off the west coast's remaining nos & used barrels fron the Iowa class battleships...they had been stored at the largest ammunition depot at Hawthorne,Nevada....The armament museum in Hawthorne was able to save an apx 6 foot section of the small end of one of the barrels...they had it cut down to a smaller size for display (still at apx 1000 lbs)...some of the thinner slices they plan on selling in their gift shop...one of the jagged end pieces is the one I was able to get for my displays....the first pic is to show the size in relation to a basketball..thoe other to show the jagged cut the scrappers made....BTW it took the scrappers 8 hours to cut the small
end!

Make a cradle to hold it (jagged side down) and put a piece of glass on top. Instant coffee table. Very cool!

Very nice, great find. We have the Wisconsin here in Norfolk and she is an awsome piece of history to tour. Those guns were something, how cool to have a part of one :!:

We have the New Jersey but apparently not for much longer. They are cutting all funding so she will probably join the Olympia across the river in heading for the scrap yard. Damn shame. Damn politicians. Hows that Hope and change workin' for ya now?

The Olympia. When I go into Penns landing where she is docked I am registering 3 feet of water and roughly 10 feet of mud. I would guess that she is on hard bottom with a hull full of water.

Look across the river and you will see the New Jersey. I will see if I can find some closer shots.

And for Raymond who I know loves his boats, The black ship is the Moshulu, a river going restaurant. About 2 stars above my pay grade. and the schooner leaving the port is a sailing ship for people learning to sail tall ships. Note the bubbles in the water, that goes on all the time. Makes you wonder what is in that mud!

I wish I had an unlimited budget. I would buy the New Jersey and make it into my private yacht and sail around the world. I'm guessing that one good look at those 16 inch guns, and any Somali pirate would look for a softer target.
