In the second and third photo, on the rear (passenger side) upright support, I see a round tube, mounted vertical, about 2 feet long and 4" in diameter. Right next to the antenna tuner. (It has U.S Army painted on it)
What is that?

Ah yes, How I remember the dense jungle. Still beautiful country. I would think you would be using more vehicles with low range transfer cases on those type of roads. Isn't it kind of hard on the clutch on a mutt in that mud in high range?

Rick, I'm sure they have a mechanic and spare parts on the trip and these guys can repair anything in the field or on the sidewalk, they are pretty amazing. And while they use the heck out of their jeeps they love them to death These jeeps are now prized possessions and real status symbols in Saigon..... Can you imagine having a group of 30 or more Mutt owners in your home town and getting together almost weekly to drive and have fun in them.... Man I think that would be way coolrickf wrote:Ah yes, How I remember the dense jungle. Still beautiful country. you are right, such a high range of mud like this, we never force the Mutt hard on the clutch as it is easy to have "good smell" after 1 minute ) so normally i will stop, get out of the Mutt and using Winch to get it out...

Re: Photo about Vietnam Jeep Club
In a lot of these situations we use 1st gear which gives us a lot of power, often more than we need. There is very little evidence of the clutch slipping unless it is already worn or badly adjusted. Anyway most of the guys just gun it from way back and hope they get through. This often works providing the ruts are not so deep, when they are you just get bedded down on the ridge with you wheels spinning on either side. In most cases thats that only reason these little jeeps get stuck or where they get into mud so deep there is insufficient traction to keep momentum.rickf wrote:Ah yes, How I remember the dense jungle. It never fails to amaze me how much punishment these little jeeps can take and still keep going, I have taken my jeeps over some pretty tough terrain, I haved grounded them hard on rocks and tree stumps, I have had my front bumper ripped off and had to use the engine cross member as a towing point when being winched out and after days of really tough offroading expecting them to run 200km or more to get me home at a speed of around 50mph with the engine bay full of the red sticky mud that sticks to everything (as ex Nam vets will remember). So far they have never let me down.
