My Two '66 Fords

Unread post by Elvis Presley » November 14th, 2011, 1:39 am

Here's my two '66 Fords. Kinda interesting putting the government contract vehicle next to the production one.

Looks a little small for a Galaxie so I am going with a Fairlane but I see the "FE" big block louvers on the hood which were never put in a Fairlane. They did make a very few 428SCJ Fairlanes.

It is a fairlane, the fairlane GT model had the chrome louvers on the hood.

The 390 was an FE motor along with the 352. Could be but I don't thing they put big blocks in a Fairlaine other than the previously mentioned. Anything is possible and it has been a LONG time since I was involved with the old Fords.

OK Elvis, what is under the hood?

Rick

P.S. Nice Mutt too.

The 1966 GTs had a single engine option: the S-code 390 four-barrel; the sixth digit in the VIN should be an S. In 1967, Ford opened the GT option up to any V-8 engine save for a 427. A variety of 289s and 390s were available that year, and so a true '67 GT or GTA becomes a little tougher to identify.
The S-code engines will all use a Holley carburetor, while any of the other '67 engines will use an Autolite Ford carb.
in 67, you could get a 427, but only on the fairlane 500, not the gt or gta models.

Guess that shows what I know, Or not! In that time period I was big into Chevy's but a friend had Fords and that was what he told me at the time. Now that has been a couple of years so I may have things turned around a bit. I can tell you that I bought a 64 Galaxie 500 XL from a back yard for 50.00. Smoked like you wouldn't believe and only ran on 6 cylinders. Bought it without even looking under the hood because I had another 64 I had crashed and I already had a motor, I just needed a body. Opened the hood and there is this HUGE air cleaner covering two 4 barrel carbs, had Lake pipes out the side and a 4 speed. Recognize this one Jim? I can tell you they were kind of rare.

sounds like one of the 212 made to qualify for nhra & nascar. if it was, it would have had a 427 with 2 holley 4 bbl carbs, solid lifters, and possibly aluminum heads. the R model 427 produced about 425 hp. The car would have been corinthian white with a red interior, and possibly some fibreglass body parts if it was one of the lightweight models. Trans would have been a borg warner t-10 4 speed and 4:11 gears in the rear end.

The man knows his Fords!!! It did not have any fiberglass though. The smoke and dead cylinders were do to the two impossible to get to plugs that had never been changed and were totally fouled. Replaced them and it ran like a bear! I sold that car for 3500.00 in 76. I saw one go off at the Barrett auction not long ago well into 6 figures. Yes, my foot will still reach my butt quite well. As soon as I sold that car it disappeared. I am guessing it is in a collection somewhere. The sad part is I have sold several cars over the years that would have made a nice retirement fund. Ah well, Young, dumb and full of ............STUPIDITY! Thought I was going to say something else didn't you? Well that is what caused the stupidity.

Hey guys I think we may have upset Elvis but talking cars instead of mutts. I notice the picture is now cropped to block out the front of the car. Sorry Elvis, my fault.

Whoa Moose is the man!!!! He knows his stuff !!!

It's a 1966 Fairlane GTA with the S code 390 (with the 428 14 bolt heads) - S code 4 barrel manifold and short "header" type manifolds. I bought it in Alabama in 1984 as a car to go back and forth to school, and it just kinda went from there.

I have seen some Air Force Fairlanes, but they were all the post four door vehicles and not 2 door hardtops. Another way to put two hobbies together - i.e. a U.S. Air Force marked 1966 Fairlane... It cold happen..

Thanks for all the great comments !!!!

Have a nice day!
