Image Notice how the drivers name is on the grill and not on the windshield.

Looks like they re-routed the fording kit, but that soldier doesn't look like Spec Rodriguez to me. Most Rodriguez's I knew were short guys.

Rodriguez is still in the latrine cleaning out his shorts. I would guess that the passenger did not fare well, there is no heater so nothing but sheet metal between the blast and his legs/chest.

I agree Rick, driver may have had a little protection from the vacuum wiper motor, but there's a lot of shrapnel there. Edge of the canvas seat cover seems okay, hopefully nobody was sitting there at the time. What do you think hit it Rick, grenade, RPG, or IED/bouncin betty?

I suspect that SP4 Rodruguez also got some down time.

Hard to say, the blast pattern was above the fender but there is shrapnel in the grill. That is what the soldier is picking at. Whatever it was blew up above and front of the fender. The side of the hood appears to have been impacted by something solid, not just blast damage. I go with an RPG with a prox. fuse and a fragmentation charge coming in from the left front. the main charge blew right above the front of the fender and the fuse and nose cone continued into the hood. Just a rough guess not being able to see any of the exit holes from the shrapnel.

What if the shrapnel actually killed the GI manning the now missing M60? No blood in the passenger seat but you can’t see the bed or if there’s blood in driver’s compartment. I’m just sayin’. Would the VC attack a vehicle with an M60, that’s being manned actively with someone looking like he wants to do harm, or would he/she fire an RPG at the Jeep that’s just toolin’ around delivering the mail? Answer... maybe both? Regardless it seems to me that this vehicle is being looked over with some interest that's of the macabre variety. Black people aren't immune to being named Rodriguez either. Seeing as many of you are vets I’d expect a little different sensitivity... that photo could be what led to multiple KIA's. But hey… what do I know… I never served.

mr d, we understand your point, but this is one of the ways we insulated ourselves from the pain that surrounded us, and even now, decades later, those coping methods are still with us. if you look at my avatar, you will see me standing up behind a 60, like i didn't have a care in the world. not long after that was taken i exited the vehicle in an unexpected and most unmilitary manner. the scars are still visible, and i see one of them every time i shave. most of the vets i know would take this approach, even to this day, and not give it a second thought. and the worse situations you were in, the more this sentiment took hold, until the phrase "don't mean nuthin" was so ingrained it was automatic. compared to many of the vets on this site, rickf and toptiger come immediately to mind, i had it easy, rode the gravy train every day. and the sentiments expressed here are pretty much what i was thinking as i looked at the picture, but i thought you deserved a serious answer to a reasonable comment.

Ralph,

Is this one of your personal photos from time in country? I find it odd that none of the soldiers are carrying their weapons and aren't wearing any hint of combat gear. BTW the jeep has two square mirrors installed, I know this has been a topic here in the past about which type was correct. The only comment I have about the possible result of the damage is that I noticed that the drivers seat is missing but the M-60 mount doesn't appear to be damaged. Could this be a vehicle have been damaged during Tet and was just sitting in the motorpool when it was hit? SP4 Rodriquez could be the individual picking shrapnel out of the grill?

Please don't put me in that bunch, 199th MP - hey I flew above all that s h it, well most of the time, that is. And, I had a swell BOQ with a hooch maid, air conditioning, water bed, and a bunch of other stuff which I must relate sometime here on the G. I had cable TV too.

When rainman chimes in I am sure he can comment more as he was in a transportation company on the ground and must have seem a lot of damage like that.

As far as RPGs go there was nothing left to gawk at when one of our ships was hit, which wasn't often. It all burned up except the end of the tail boom.

Rick, did RPGs have proximity fuses? I thought they were contact detonated, shaped charges. But then I never saw one up close.
