A few answers to your thoughts on these pics. I was stationed near this area-next to the 11 ACR. The photo of the 3 troopers was 1974 at the earliet. Because is the fall of 1973 we had to paint ALL our vehicles to this camo pattern-it SUCKED! Prior to this everything was OD Green. The sand color on the camo pattern made our tanks and tracks stick out like a sore thumb against the conifers woods. Most this area was heavily Conifer forested.Even in the hard woods this pattern stuck out. All the white stars were changed to the black as seen. Even the Bumper #s were changed to black. If white was still used-mud was applied during the War Games constantly played.

In all my yeras in Germany and Dan can attest to this did I ever see the Bundesvere and the frontier Border Troops using Land rovers! This was an AUDI Jeep-3 cylinder 2 stroke engine and yes they sounded just like a dirt bike and left the classic Blue smoke trailer! The Germans used THEIR own made jeeps plus the VW jeep, like the civilain VW THING.

I had a brief stint in this unit before. This again was 1974 at the earliest to late seventies-OD Green Fatigues.

Hard top on the A2s-allmost ALL units switched to these by the early 1980's-, to keep the OFFICERS WARM ! Prior to this, the only hard tops used were by thge AIRFORCE FAC teams that worked with the Armor /ACR units.

Border Gaurds- CORRECT on the P38's

Late 70's the Camo pattern was changed to more GREEN and Less Tan and Red Brown.

Another note: That M151a1 has a STRAIT M151 windshield and notice the EARLY Canvas cover-split 2 window and side canvas.

No Canadian troops were stationed in this area. They and the Brits were farther north, french to the west-NOT a Nato Member at the time.

Hi !

The Border Troops (Bundesgrenzschutz) did indeed use Land Rovers, both a licence produced Serie I (IIRC) and the 88 Serie II. The two stroke engined vehicle was not produced by Audi (the firm did´nt exist at the time), it was produced by Auto-Union and known as the DKW Munga.

(http://de.wikipedia.org/wiki/Bundesgrenzschutz) - Paragraph "Geländewagen"

About Audi:
"The company is headquartered in Ingolstadt, Germany, and has been a wholly owned (99.55%)[4] subsidiary of Volkswagen AG since 1966, following a phased purchase of its predecessor, Auto Union, from its former owner, Daimler-Benz. Volkswagen relaunched the Audi brand with the 1965 introduction of the Audi F103 series.

The company name is based on the surname of the founder August Horch, his surname meaning listen in German—which, when translated into Latin, becomes Audi. The four rings each represent individual car companies that banded together to create the union. Its slogan or tagline is Vorsprung durch Technik, meaning "Progress through Technology". More recently, however, Audi has updated the tagline to "Truth in Engineering" in the U.S."

Taken from http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Audi

Hope this helps.

The truck in that image sure looks like a Landrover Series III. The Germans (& the Canadians for that matter) used both the VW & Munga http://www.militaryoldtimer.eu/images/m ... 01_big.jpg . Think that had a three cylinder engine in it. And yes they also used the VW type 181 "thing" in BW grey/green livery.

As for the P-38s, like the MG42 they were kept in service long after the end of the second World War. Their post war nomenclature was "P-1". I know they were in use up into the late 1980s but not sure how much longer past that (maybe still in use?) .

I'm assuming that this photo is late '70s early '80s by the ODs worn by our guys? Notice that the M151 is an A1 and not an A2.
Matt
Matt I thought it was a Canadian vehicle at first because of the similarity to CDN camo, but it's an M151A1...and they didn't use them. The camo looks to be "Summer - US and Europe" which didn't seem to get used much. Most of the 4-color mutts in BRD used "Winter-US & Europe" pattern.

Thought that pattern on the A1 looked kind of odd but noticing the bumper markings, I just assumed it was US & not Canadian. The three guys wearing the M65 field jackets & "pickle suits" was also a give away  . Not sure when the Canadians replaced the C1A1 with the M16 .
Matt
The C7 (M16A2) replaced the FN in the mid/late 80s. We wore solid OD "Combats" well into the early 2000s. Never really had any brown in Canadian cam patterns (except for the Leopards, M109s and 10 Ton Steyrs), all the rest (1970-80s) were a 3 color combo of Green, Olive Drab and Black. In the early 90s we went to a solid 383 CARC Green with all of our vehicles.

Matt, I think you may be thinking of the Bombardier Iltis. We had those from approx 1985 to 2005.

I bought one of those post war P-38's in 1987 when I was stationed there. It was manufactured in 1968 and has West German proof marks on it. I brought it and a CZ 85 back with me.
