M151A2's in Vietnam

Unread post by mike » June 2nd, 2012, 12:25 pm

Hi! Here are the pictures I found while searching thru the internet. All of them present A2's being used in Vietnam. I always saw people arguing that there were no A2's in Nam so I decided to do my own investigation and here are the results. Most of the pictures are low resolution but you can clearly see the most important characteristics of the A2 model. The places the pictures were taken are mostly Da Nang, Plei ku and Phu Bai 1970-72.

Thanks for the photos. (The only one I've seen before was the one with the TOW carriers.) I've heard the same thing, though, that the A2 came too late to make VN. But I've always wondered why/how so many A2s are over there. I mean, if the first A2s came out in 1970, we pulled out militarily in 1972, and politically in 1975 I'd assume we sent a fair number over there. Likewise, I see current/recent pictures of MUTTs in Vietnam, and while a lot of the pictured MUTTs seems to cobbled up from all different models, they bear a lot of A2 parts/traits. Apparently the A2 is pretty popular over there. Here's a thread from this site that has a lot of "recent" photos: http://www.g838.org/viewtopic.php?f=7&t=5555
Interesting, to say the least, eh?

Look at the length of the hair on the guy sitting on the hood of the 825. Regs were pretty lax by then. I remember seeing the TOW systems so I had be seeing the A2's. At the time I was not paying much attention to the vehicles. I was there in 71.

And I was a year old.......

Like others have posted, I too had heard that no A2s were shipped to RVN. But then again, I had also heard that A2s were shipped the RVN for use by the ARVN while US forces over there retained the A1. From what I've read on sites like this one & the G503 (& I may be mistaken) is that the A1s over there (now) are rare because they got used up/worn out first and the later A2s are the ones that are left. Still think it is interesting when members here who either live or travel over to Vietnam post images of G838s and they always seem to be A2s.

Notice all of the A2s in the images above have the straight bottem edge to their front fenders. Early Ford built A2s.

The string Bill refers to is the day I spent with the Vietnam Jeep Club last Sept. I ask the fellows about the A2 issue since I have never seen anything but A2 fenders there, even on a1 rigs and they told me everyone there likes the A2 look, and if they get a 151 or A1 they change the fenders so it looks like an A2.... They are so good at metal work over there I am sure they can fab them even if there is no NOS or existing stock available. Although, I think JohnFal recently scored a A1 with the flat fenders there.

Found another A2 picture from Vietnam. This one shows an ARVN A2 (Ford/AMG) during the last hours of the evacuation of Saigon in 1975. Picture taken from the television series 'Vietnam war with Walter Cronkite' by CBS. The quality is poor but still you can clearly see the composite lights and the 1971 Ford/1972 AMG fenders.

Sorry I found this late. A few years ago when I was doing my research about truck drivers in Vietnam. I had a guy tell me that he got a speeding ticket!! Well for me being the young kid that I am could not believe a speeding ticket in a war zone. So I did some research on MP units in the Centeral Highlands and I found the 18th MP Unit and chatted with a couple of the Veterans. This is where I found pics of the A2 in Vietnam.

A large portion of the A2s that were shipped to Vietnam were for the ARVN as part of "Vietnamization" so GI's would have not even seen them towards the end.

Here's a new picture of an A2 in Vietnam.
At first, I thought to myself - "hey, they had canvas tops with large A2-type windows in the back" but when I looked closely, I was very surprised to see it WAS an A2!!!
