German pilot rescues lives of Californian...

... avocados. Hmmm, that's probably why I did not make it in the news. Anyway, 2 solid days of frost control, I love the States !

Lifting of at midnight sitting in my ship looking at the second one:

almost done:

I was thinking about getting another M151 for over here. At least I was flying an ex-Army ship, the OH-58 (not pictured, the Jetranger was the second helo on scene)

Horst, please don't tell me you are spraying at night?
Hopefully you are getting ready for a dawn run, no?

Does anyone use those new gps/synthetic vision devises? If I were still flying I have one. Even though I rarely flew with little or limited horizon, even in the army

Fly safe.

I didn't know anyone was still flying the Bell Jet Ranger helicopter. Are those still in production ?(or is some museum missing it's exhibit?)

Top,

We are not spraying. We just use the slight inversion layer. When it is 32 on the ground, it might be 34 - 36° in about 30-60ft over the trees. So the only thing we do is bring that warmer air down. While a lot of the fields have wind machines, they are not as effective. Typical height is where the power lines are. Flights start between midnight and 3 in the morning until the sun starts to warm up things.
The most dangerous part was getting to the LZ at night as there where hills and power lines all over the place. I was exactly thinking the same thing, synthetic vision would be the thing to have. The flying is not totally risk free, there were some losses already this year people doing that kind of job.

And Matt, yes we fly Jetrangers. They are out of production but still one of the best ships for doing jobs like that. The OH-58A/C is the military version, out of production since 30 years I would guess.

Typical sight picture:

Rick, I think Horst has huge ones- I'd rather they try and shoot me than doing what he is doing at night.

A friend of mine here flies for the local FOX news channel and he love flying at night. Of coarse he is flying a bit above 50 FT. and there is a lot of light from the towns and cities around here. I flew into a local small, read SMALL, airport nearby with a pilot friend in a Cessna 152 at night and the only thing there was the office lights and about 2/3 of the runway lights. I have no idea how he knew where to start his glide slope other than it was his home airport. I know my arse had a tight hold on the seat!

For small aircraft I've flown in a Cesna 172(?) a Piper Super cub(that was fun) and a UH60 Blackhawk probably the most fun (and exciting) of all three. Would really like to try open cockpit like a Steerman some time.

Horst,
Have you ever flown an H-34 (civilian version is S-58-I think)?

Horst, Are you still flying out of Paso Robles? Maybe we will see each other if the airtankers get sent there.

Sure. Same old airport. They even have re-opened some restaurant in the terminal building. Looking forward to see you there. I never know exactly when but pretty sure a few times again this year.
