Type 181 "Thing" used by the W.German Army (back in the 1970s?). Did that replace or was it replaced by the VW Iltis?

I knew the G Wagon was the latest & greatest. So I guess the type 181 (Thing) replaced the "Munga"? :) Man, the Germans are as bad as we are about changing over designs every few years....

No. Munga and 181 existed in parallel. Both replaced by the Iltis. Then Wolf (Mercedes G).

Nice one! Funny that cars like the "thing" now already fetch some silly prices whereas the "Munga" still no one cares about.

You could buy a dozen of the former for the price of one of the later.

But isn't it the same with the M151 and the Humvee? Well, not a dozen.

I had a couple of "Things" back in the 70's. Loved them and wished I never got rid of them. One had the gas heater. Always had a crowd around the left front fender on a cold night. (heater exhaust)

I've slowly been developing an appreciation for the Thing. Couldn't stand them or Karman Ghia's as a kid but as time passes they seem to grow on me. I love the name "Munga" but man that's a vehicle only of mother could love.I'm sure time will prove me wrong and I'll own one in my 50's

Munga actually stands for Mehrzweck Universal Geländewagen mit Allradantrieb. In English multi purpose offroad vehicle with four wheel drive. So something similar like MUTT. I had one for 10 years as my daily driver. Loved it but then got my M201 and it had to go.

Who edited my post? I didn't highlight anything in red or type in anything about a "Healy" (which really isn't 'correct' anyway because I have an Austin "Healey" 3000 anyways). I would appreciate moderators not editing my posts. If I'm far enough off base, with politics or religion as to defy forum rules, then so be it. Otherwise leave my text as is.

That is no style and should not happen around here.

Wasn't me. Although I have almost done similar. In the past I have hit the "EDIT" instead of "QUOTE" button. I have "EDIT" on everyone's posts as part of the "moderator" function. I suspect that might be the case. Probably nothing sinister in intent. Please don't take it as so.
