taking a 73 a2 from emissions to non emission

Unread post by Lindsay36551 » December 17th, 2018, 9:37 pm

Looking for some technical knowledge,
Looking to take my 73 a2 from full emission to a1 standards
Q-! is it possible?
Q-2 Do I keep return fuel to tank?
Q-3 Is this correct , all I have to do is cap off all the lines to the now discarded charcoal canister?
I have an early model air cleaner without the hose portals.
Q-4 I have the cap to stop the return gas flow for the carburetor.
If this cant be done I have all parts to keep it as it was. :? :? :? :?

You can just take the return line off of the carb and put a 1/8" pipe plug in that hole. You will block off all the emissions lines at the tank but you do have to retain the vent line to the air cleaner. You will also need to be sure you have a vented gas cap. Keep in mind that the return line from carb to tank is not emission, it was put there to eliminate vapor lock. I have deleted a couple of them with no complaints of vapor lock and one of them has been on every convoy across the country except one.

Rick told me it could be done several years ago when I was swapping an A1 to a mechanical pump and I'm sure it can, but I ran into a problem. Went to Autozone and bought the Airtex mechanical pump for the Dodge slant 6, after the install, the jeep would flood after start up. Ran a return vent line and never had another problem, just seemed like the pump put up too much pressure, can't remember what Rick thought the problem was, been too long ago.

the A2's already had a mechanical fuel pump. So I am a wee bit confused. :?:

Early Ford A2s and first rum AMGs did not have emissions canister on them.
The reurn line was in place .
No need to block it off.

I don't remember what the problem was either but those Airtex pumps are not exactly the highest quality and you would have to check the pressure before anything. The return would have nothing to do with that since the metered hole is so small it is designed for vapor and not fluid. It will return some fluid but it will not reduce pressure.
