Any M113 mechanics out there?

Unread post by WC Matt » July 26th, 2016, 9:41 pm

Guys
As the title of my post reads I'm asking are there any former (or current) M113 mechanics on the G838? Curious to know when you're removing the steering diff from the hull do you have to break track and remove the left side final drive first?

If you don't hear from anyone send a PM to Salt6, judging from his avatar he might know a bit about them.

I remember talking to Salt several times about tracks so I know he has experience in them.

Hi, if memory serves me right, no, you should be able to remove the drive shafts as we did when we had to tow them "but", you may have to remove the Power Pack to get the steering diff apart.
Check the link below. hope it helps.

There's a drive shaft from the transmission to the diff & that one was easy enough to remove. The one that is being briggity is the short shaft that sends power from the diff to the final drive (on the vehicle that I'm working on, that'd be the left hand shaft). When you try to back a bolt out, it comes into contact with it's opposite number on the other half of that short shaft. I've checked the two manuals (I need to pick up more)I have for the vehicle, -34 rebuild and the -20-1 maint. and neither mentions how to remove the diff.

Matt, I think there "may" be a 1/2 collar on the final drive (like a main bearing cap on a engine) that when taken off will allow the outer yoke to be pushed in for clearance. :?:
Also at the top of the link page in the blue area on the right you will find a list of page #, and if you click on the title just above that you will get a full index.

Mr.Recovery
I'll have a look for that half collar this week (weather cooperating). Thanks for the link.

George
Yes it's the short shafts that take power from the differential to the final drives that have to come out. I got the longer of the two removed. It's the real short one that is stumping me.

If I remember correctly, as you loosen the bolts you can shove the yoke back into the final drive or diff. We always removed the shaft from the final drive when towing to save time. I'ts been a very long time so I could be wrong and I was just a mech grunt. :)

If you have a 113 with the laterals, the differential should come out by its self. You might have open the upper deck with all that involves.

Thanks for the replies. I'll look into that, Salt6. I have a friend who was an M113 driver (back in the 1980s,stationed in Germany). Apparently, that damaged final drive pic was a somewhat common ouchie for m113s. He told me of one coming down on a large rock outcropping & it busted that f/d housing. The vehicle I'm working on isn't exactly an M113 but an M548A1. The tubs & power packs are the same (M113A2) though.

Yes my vehicle has the laterals and the diff can be removed by itself. It's just that short shaft on the driver's side that's being briggidy...

This might help. Lots of reading though. I'll see if I still have any pubs tomorrow.
