Rear Fender Supports - Input needed!

Unread post by lpcoating » September 6th, 2016, 6:13 pm

Need some input. Getting back into the rear fender supports. Question is this: There are some stiffener ribs that run the length of the support. On the A2 models it's a deeper rib compared to the older ones. When I did the samples I did not have the tooling to make this rib and did so without. I later found some tooling but would have to modify. I'm not sure anyone would really care and if not, I don't want to add the cost to the part. Here are some pictures of what we made and a sample of what the rib looks like. If I added the rib it would only be in the center of the part, between the two oval cut outs. So, what say you people? Also, without the rib and I can run parts this week. Maybe you can see what direction I'm leaning towards? :D

Form over function? I vote to leave them alone, the lip around the cutouts will add a lot of strength. If you need more strength then that then you need a different vehicle for what you are doing.

Rick, I am appalled! I recall losing points from a certain judge at Aberdeen a few years back because of my "form over function" fuel pump!!

Obviously I am kidding and don't think anyone would know about the missing rib unless you educated them first. Don't ask don't tell about the rib!

Just finished the shop prints for the A2 rear fender support and I'll create the work orders tomorrow. We'll run a batch of driver side and passenger side and might have ready for the Gilbert show. Will post price this week. Most people were not concerned about the parts not having the ribs but I did get a request for them to be as close to original as possible. As everyone on here should know, we make these parts as close to the original as possible. Having said that, I'll go back at some point and see what we can do with the rib. For now, those that need them will have an option.

I wasn't aware you could even import that piece. Cheap or otherwise.

My Dad always used to say, "The difference between doing a good job and a great job is usually only a difference of about 30 seconds." In this case, it's probably more than 30 seconds but you get the point. I think the answer to this question simply boils down to an issue of reputation and you can't put a price on that. You do unquestionably beautiful, accurate work that keeps most guys salivating. Continue to do just that. Make it perfect.

My support was wrecked by rednecks years ago and there hasn't been a decent option for replacement so it was just ignored (cant see it without trying)
Guess I will have to pony up and get one, now that my excuses are all gone.

You guys screaming to make it perfect do realize that it is going to substantially add to the cost don't you?
