Weakness frame M151?

Unread post by Ady » November 5th, 2016, 6:23 am

With a had a underbody inspection I noticed a crack above the rear differential.
When I went to look at the second Mutt I saw the same crack on the same side.

Maybe it’s a weak point of the Mutt A2?
Let me know if you have ascertain the same.

I've seen posts on here where I think that issue was addressed with a reinforcement plate. I'm sure someone will chime in. I would repair with a "fish plate" over top, angle the ends so you do not have stress risers.

Thats spooky!
The reinforcement kit was for the prior model A2s with pressed metal parts. Contract 73-0103
The forward diff mount shown there was the new and improved design.
It appears thar the sress caused by the diiff was transferred from the mount down to the frame.
Looks like another fix is in order to strengthen things there.
Get out the scrap steel and welding tools.

That second picture is pretty severe. It goes down under the rail through two different layers. I would look very closely at the other side of that also and definitely fish plate it, maybe both sides. There was a MWO issued for a 2-3 year stretch of A2's for cracking diff mounts and there was a support brace made to repair the problem. I never saw the problem myself so I don't know if this is it but it makes sense.

Reading what Fil said tells me this is not the same thing. Was this possibly caused by loose bolts on one or more of the other legs of the mount?

There appears to be several versions of the later fix.
The one on my 79 contract is different and probably corrected some of these problems.
In addition it looks like there were failures just under the mount.
Can send you a pic if like to see another version

I'm pretty sure I have one of these kits. I'm on the tail end of a move and will have to see if I can find it.
