Here is some homely looking guy showing the passenger side..even with the edge:

This is the drivers side with about a three inch overlap from the edge:

And this is showing the misalignment for the straps and the spare tire hump

...and praying for no snap, crackle, and pops :-)

I have to agree, stretching it straight back is one thing but changing the diagonal shape is something else. You are going to be pulling a hell of a strain on an angle on the windshield and I do not see good things coming out of it. A new top should at least be inline, a bit short is expected but not out of alignment. I would measure the seams in the top just like to did the windshield to body. Measure the seams front to back and also diagonal to see if it was made crooked.

Are there any markings on it. If not then my guess is it's not GI.

As Salt said, if it's not GI, I would send it back, if it is 50 yr old NOS top, you will probably run into the same type of problems with a new one, if you decide to tackle this one, you need to focus more weight on the left side, plus it will need to be pulled down tight. Make sure your bows are not tweaked to the left side.

Read the thread from the beginning guys, you are starting to confuse the issue here. It is an aftermarket top from Surplus City.

Well I went to their site and they list an A2 top and a NOS A2 top. So which he has is up in the air. If it is an NOS A2 top from the military then it should stretch out with patience but if it is and aftermarket one that was sewn wrong then it will never fit right. I know several people that have gotten bad tops from there, that is why I stress checking all the dimensions.

I would agree Rick, looks like a phone call is in order, I know there are correct fitting remans out there, I see they build these in-house.

Howdy,
Did you try pushing the top bow assembly sideways? They may be out of square. With the top bows assembled, check if the uprights are actually 90* to the fender tops.

I stand corrected--it is an aftermarket top...
So, I reckon that it might be made crooked.
Still waiting on a response from Chuck from surpluscity (benefit of the doubt--it is the holiday weekend).
Will also check out my bows, just to make sure it isn't me...

Will keep you guys up to date as the mystery unfolds..

Thanks a million!

Soooo, there is a happy ending to this!

I bought a new set of NOS bows and replaced the bows that came with the MUTT...got a good deal on a new set for $125, so I figured I would do that before raising Cain.
Lo and behold, with the new bows, the top fit like a glove.
Got to give credit where credit is due-the SurplusCity top does fit.

I really appreciate everyone's help and advice on this...and glad to scratch this off of my 'to do' list...now to focus on getting the old boy to turn over!!

Thanks!
kk
