NOS slave cable and 24 maintainer

Unread post by incoming » January 11th, 2017, 9:36 pm

Being impulsive, as I have been known to be, I purchased an NOS two pin slave cable still in the original package, and the 24 volt battery maintainer found in the link below. I am going to hardwire the maintainer into a short section of the slave cable (yes I will cut the cable to length) and use that to maintain the batteries in my MUTT. Besides the merits of using the two 12 volt charger set up, can anyone see a problem with this arrangement? As a preface, it does not get too cold here in Louisiana, so I will only be using the maintainer for short periods of time since the MUTT will not sit long unused.

As always, thank you for your response.

If it will not be sitting unused then why the maintainer? It should work just fine but keep in mind that you still need to check the individual batteries once in a while. If a single battery starts to fail then the charger will read lead less than 24 volts and charge accordingly which in turn will overcharge the good battery.

Makes sense to me. I will be sure to check the batteries individually. I was going to use the maintainer for a few days at a time in case the MUTT sat up for a month or two so the batteries would be hot. Not really worried about maintaining the battery but I prefer the way they charge slow and go into float mode when done. Thanks again!

Mine sits for months at a time and still fires up Just make sure the light switches for the dash lights are off. That is the biggest mistake I see people make, you can turn off the headlights and leave the dash lights on. I always leave the switch in service position all the time so I do not go out and forget to turn it on and hence have no brake lights!

AH! Hadn't thought of that Rick. What a great idea. I will put my switch to Service position and keep it there. Thanks for the tip!
