Can somebody explain why there is such a big difference between the published horse power of the M151 engine (71hp) and the measured power (60hp)?

I looked up the dyno sheet of my replacement engine but unfortunately the overhaul folks only recored percentage of rated power, not absolute numbers.

George, knowing you and how you are with analytical data that must have been a sexual experience reading that piece of data!! There is a lot of information in there but the VERY last paragraph explains why the results were not better, the parts were made by Prestolite.   For those that may be wondering what that whole deal is all about in today's parts books you would be looking at things like the MSD-6AL in a Summit book. I run the capacitive discharge ignition on all of my race cars and off road vehicles. The spark voltages and duration are much improved now over those tests but even back then it was proven it worked. Why did they not go with it?

hi

Rickf

it is not the ignition used at the mutt i never see one with extern module and vacuum advance :?:
at the report is also standing a expected MUTT live (page 6 and 13) of 50000 mile or 3500 hours
they used oil type 10W30 at the test

Horst
for the 60 hp i think it is on the wheels at page 57 they are set it at 71 hp

the indoline 30 is a standard testing fuel

for the rest they say trow it away if don t need the report :D

Horst, I am not going to read all through that report again but either it could be like George said and it was checked on a chassis dyno which is likely given the type of testing or it might have been the fact that the tests were limited to certain rpm,s and not the rated rpm.

browsing thru the report again. Specifically mentions that the testing was done on an engine dyno. As you can see from the dyno plot, the engine produces max power at 4.000rpm. Page 47: Published power 71HP, measured 61BHP ??
