Yeti vs. Mermite
Been looking for a couple years locally for a Mermite, these popped up on Craigslist only a few miles away, decided I couldn't pass up the deal, they are complete with the inserts and the seals seem to be in good shape with a tight seal, picked them both up for about 25% of what a Yeti cost and look way cooler, going to see if they will keep my sodas cold this weekend.

Re: Yeti vs. Mermite
Those look nice!. I bought one years ago at an MV swap meet before the prices went crazy for them. That one will still have ice it in when morning comes during our southern summers. A few years later we were helping a widow of a MV guy sell some of her stuff and I bought one that had it's paint stripped and its internal insulation had broken apart and was rattling around inside. Since it was so rough I only had to pay $5 for it. So I drilled four holes one on each side of the plastic area under where the seal goes and sprayed great stuff foam inside. I put three cans of the stuff in there. Then painted it and found the paper labels to paste on the lid. It looks great but any ice inside it is gone by the end of the day.

Re: Yeti vs. Mermite
I put ice in my Mermites and in my Coleman of about the same size and they sit side by side when camping and the ice lasts just about exactly the same between the two of them with the edge going to the Coleman. The Mermites were not really designed to keep stuff hot or cold for days, just a few hours between the kitchen and the line. And then they were packed tight which also helps.

Re: Yeti vs. Mermite
We didn't get hot chow often in the field but anything from a Mermite trumped anything from a C-rat can.
Seeing this thread sparked some memories. I ordered a surplus Mermite today. It will make a great drink cooler for my 151.

I've taken mine out a few times, what I like about it, nobody steals your beer, they think it's a toolbox.

Re: Yeti vs. Mermite
I never found the Mermites to be particularly good coolers, I mean, if you put ice in plastic grocery sack, you can chill beer that way too but insulation makes all the difference. On my sailboat I use an Engel Deep Blue 35 cooler stowed in the bilge running block ice and it will keep ice for the entirely of a 10 day trip. Yeti coolers seem about comparable so I don't think the Mermite can is a good competitor to the Yeti.
Now one of those 24V coolers out of a Humvee ambulance, that's a whole different ball of wax.

ARB makes a 12 volt civilian version cooler that is nice. Cools or heats.

Re: Yeti vs. Mermite
Found the Mermite will keep ice and sodas for 2 days, plenty of time to stir up a good hangover.
