Turbine Powered M151

Unread post by Nick_ » April 19th, 2017, 3:49 pm

I bought an original press release photo of a turbine powered M151. It was taken in 1963. After researching, I can't find any other pictures or information. Did I stumble upon something unique? Does anyone have other pics or info?

The description states:
"This Jeep is maneuvering with a new experimental 75-horsepower gas turbine engine. It is being tested at the Williams Research Corp.'s Walled Lake, Mich., facility. The company calls it the world's smallest automotive gas turbine."

Ignore the watermark. I haven't revived it yet to properly scan.

I think there are a few pictures of one at Aberdeen proving grounds also. They tried many different powerplants in the M-151, From mild to outright ridiculous, as you see here.

Is there any footage of the turbine Mutt? Sounds crazy, but would be fun to watch. I'm wonder if they had a wastegate to keep the engine spooled up.

That looks exactly like some of the experiments that were trialled using Land Rovers here in the UK. Most were to try and improve mobility, one of the more outrageous being the installation of a pair of huge Archimedes screws, and another modified to be a hovercraft! The majority proved to be dead ends, but must have been fun working in the trials and experimental departments where these things were done.
