Engine color and seat question

Unread post by agwrangler » May 5th, 2017, 9:58 am

I am almost done with engine reassembly and its going to be time to paint. I have noticed 2 different colors for engines, black and green. So what was the difference? Factory was black and rebuilds were green??

Also, one of my front seats has a straight backrest and the other has a sloped backrest. Whats the story on that?? Early seat vs old?

Thanks. Ag

Engine color as a general rule, factory colors were green for the A1 and black for the A2. Rebuilds could be either depending on when they were done. Early rebuilds would have been green but all later rebuilds were black and set up for an A2 with a blueprint included showing how to convert to an A1. So you could have an A1 with a black engine. The seats were all the same angle, depending on what position you have the later style lift and drop adjust seat the back will lay back a little more in the rear position. The screw adjust may lay back a little is the rearward position, I never noticed. The frame itself is all the same. You might have a bent seat frame.

Well, I have 2 NOS seat frames where the backrest sways back as it goes up. One of the seat frames in the A2 also sways back as it goes up. But the driver frame is straight as an arrow, no sway. Weird. Was just an observation i noticed, but nothing of consequence.

Are you saying the frame is two part? The frame is supposed to be one solid part top around to the bottom front. The part the attaches to the floor is curved a bit so when you move the seat to the rear position it will tilt a little. Keep in mind that if you are doing this while it is sitting on the floor that when in the vehicle the front mounts are lower than the rear mount so it will be sitting lower in the front when in the vehicle.

yes, that famous engine color question. I believe Rick is right in general, however my "Barstow" 151 came with a green engine. So paint it whatever you like if it is an A2, you might be factory correct in any case :)

Horst that is interesting. I always thought Barstow Mutts come with all black drivetrain components.

There is actually one for sale in Germany.

BTW how often were markings on the engine seen? On some restored M151 you see the oil stenciled to the valve cover. But I have never seen period pictures.
