Front bumper rope???

Unread post by colkking » May 10th, 2017, 11:15 pm

Guys,
Thoughts on the rope on the front bumper?
I think it looks pretty cool. Any thoughts on how/if it should be wrapped on the front bumper?

Getting close over here. :-)

Thanks,
kk

I think putting that stuff on the front bumper was a field expedient method, more in keeping with the WWII era where the used of rope (as opposed to strap or cable) was more common. So you can do it in the manner that you find most sensible or most appealing to your eye. It's your truck!

Just remember to secure it well .....because if and when it comes off while you're driving, you won't know it until it gets wrapped around some of the moving parts under your truck. You know...the parts that are relentlessly going round and round at warp speed?...and then you'll hear a loud noise which will be the sound of many, many dollars flying out of your wallet.

This brings up and interesting facet of the hobby and that is, what is the back story of your truck. I don't think there really is a correct answer. What look are you trying to achieve?

Many of the guys mention that in-theater trucks were often without any pioneer kit (likely owing to theft or theft prevention) while those in garrison might have been required to have every issued piece of kit. Trucks routinely operated in poor conditions that might require they be towed would likely have the kit to facilitate that, whether it be rope, strap, or cable. Arguably, such kit might be kept in the tool locker unless operated in a place where stuck vehicles were going to be sitting ducks and then such kit would likely be found ready to be put into use.

On my 151 I have a rope wrapped around the bumper, as there was a couple of times when the jeep broke down, had to tow it home, my rescuer came with a vehicle. It prevented me having to go home 1st to get the rope.I used to keep the shovel/axe on the jeep, but quit after the 1st time someone stole them.My other jeep has a tow bar attachment welded to the front bumper, but i leave the tow bar at home.

don't think it fits. I have never seen any period pictures with a rope around the bumper. That of course does not say it was not done. But as said above, WWII jeep thing. Having said that, I have a helicopter sling rope inside my spare wheel

Self recovery, or at least having the kit to assist yourself or others in recovery is never a bad idea, Mark, unless someone gets hurt in the process. If recovery is your sole purpose I would recommend keeping a more modern snatch strap in the tool locker. They are far stronger (and safer) than most rope.

Like Horst, I haven't seen any period photos of rope on the front bumper either but again, it's your truck. Do what pleases you most.....and then send us pics!

Cheers,
TJ

After more than 7 month in storage, I pulled the jeep out today and took a picture to show what I was talking about:

With rivets Matt  This photo was taken at a jeep show in 2011. It was the only mutt entry among WW2 jeeps and it won the most major awards, much to the dismay of the other participants. The show is an annual event held inside a shopping mall every 4th of July and it's a big crowd magnet. The WW2 jeep owners informed the organisers that they might not attend the 2012 show if my mutt joins again. I had to reassure them that if ever I bring my mutts to the show, I will just be exhibiting them and I won't enter them in the competition.

Yeah I've heard stories from when MVers show up to car shows and the hot-rod guys get all pissy and I've heard that the WWII jeep guys can sometimes be that was as well.

Some folks are quick to lump the M151s in with the Jeeps. Others aren't.

I've found that our local hot rodders are very accepting of the MVs. Hard not to be with all the modern stuff showing up fresh off the showroom floor. But we all know what it takes to keep the old iron on the road. And yet, on the other end of the argument we have some modern Jeep enthusiasts who are very deeply entrenched in their mind-set and the JEEP badge. By way of example....Not long ago, and on a lark, I swung into a local Jeep gathering in my M109A3. First thing I heard was, "THAT isn't a JEEP." I replied, "The hell it ain't! It was manufactured in 1966 by Kaiser Jeep." I figure it's pretty tough to argue with that.

As my venerated Dad used to say, "Perception always depends upon whose ox is being gored."
