New Owner of Mutt M151 A1

Unread post by roadrunner54 » May 29th, 2017, 6:57 am

Hi Everyone!
I have recently become an owner of a 1959 M151 A1 in the UK. I have been a silent member of the G838 for some time. Now being a M151 owner, I feel I can be an active member. Having read over previous posts, I know you all love pictures. The quickest way to view her, would be by going via the board index, M151's for sale, post by challenger II, on the 13th April. ( I did try to attach the link but it didn't seem to work?)
I am hoping to establish a bit more about her background. She was issued to the US Army, then sold on to the Danish Army, before coming to the UK in 2015/2016. The data plate on the dash, shows delivery date 07, 66, yet the UK V5 registration form states 1959?
If anyone can shed any light, or point me in the right direction, that would be great.
I'm quite sure with me just obtaining this vehicle, I will need further assistance regarding information on my new purchase....
Thanks guys.

Hi !

The Danish Army purchased their first M151s in 1967, all brand new. A second batch of used vehicles were bought around 1972. All vehicles were the A1-version. Why the previous owner had yours registered as a 59-model I don´t know (taxation ?).

Hope this helps.

Yes, I remember commenting on this one, it is an a1 which makes it 64 or later so I think the 66 data plate is accurate and that goes along with what Henrik also said. That means the data plate is probably original to the vehicle.

Hi Roadrunner,
Welcome to G838.org THE source of good information and sage advice on M151s - it has saved my bacon many times as I knock my A2 into shape (I am not a natural mechanic and it is 30 years since I got under the bonnet of a motor).
There are a few of us Brits on here and the more the merrier. Our American cousins do not know how hard we have it without the mountains of Mutt parts they seem to enjoy  and the Dollar - Sterling/Euro exchange rate is certainly not in our favour at the moment :( .
If you would like to PM me and tell me where you are in the UK perhaps we could hook up at a show?
Kind regards,
Challenger 2

Thanks for pointing that out 9th, I am as guilty as the rest. I just go new "new post" and don't pay attention to the forum title sometimes if I have been busy. I will move this over to the correct forum.

Hi All,
Cheers for the welcome to the G838 club.
I am looking to replace the all the tyres on my Mutt and am I thinking of Omaha tyres. Do you have to have inner tubes to go with the tyres? What do you think, it is just the tyres currently on the vehicle have been re-grooved and not in the best condition at all.
Thanks

You might want to mention that you are in the UK, so it would not make sense for those of us over on this side of the pond to make suggestions since what is available there is going to be quite a bit different than here.

Hello Folks.....
it turns out that Les lives about 35 miles away from me here in NW England. Yesterday me and Mrs W decided to pop round to meet up with him. My wife sat in the car reading a book while I promised her that I'd spend no more than an hour with Les..... he was the perfect host but as the sun was shining and the weather was terrific, I had to honour my promise to my good lady and left after nearly two hours chatting about mutts.

Les has a great little vehicle there...... it is currently having the front wheel-drive shafts under refurbishment (new U-Js) and the exhaust is blowing (and it seems like the exhaust manifold is leaking a bit, too) but otherwise, it looks pretty sound.
Les has already begun to buy add-ons (I think we know that syndrome well, eh guys?) and somehow he's managed to obtain a box-base antenna plus the correct lower antenna section (he's looking for the correct upper section), he's found a correct-dated gascan, an M60 pedestal mount (no kidding) along with a couple of Mermite cans....etc etc.

It has the original dash dataplate which corresponds to the BUDD tag and there's even an original first-type DA Label 76 on the dash (A Good Driver).

I took some photos which you can see below. Along with Dave Ball who owns 5 A2s, there's a nice little group of mutt owners here in Lancashire so mine isn't lonely any more !

Kind regards as always....
Ken
