New owner in Ohio

Unread post by recon217 » June 12th, 2017, 11:17 am

I'm picking up a 76 M151A2 out of Kentucky in the near future. Since it's coming from out of state, here in Ohio we have to have a serial number inspection. Where is the serial located, if anywhere else besides the data plate. Or will the one on the plate suffice?
Thanks,
Mike Haines

The only "serial number" you will have is the one on the data plate. The only other number on that vehicle if it is actually a 70 A2 will be under the hood on the cowl right above the valve cover. There is a BUDD tag welded to the cowl and there are manufacturing numbers on that tag. They are not serial numbers but are contract numbers and assembly line control numbers. This vehicle, again if a 1970 A2 would have been made by Ford. Ford only made A2's for two years and then AMG took over the contract and the body tag moved to inside on the transmission tunnel. 1970 Ford A2's are rather rare so that is why I keep mentioning that, it should have unique front fenders that are straight across from the turn signal to the grill unlike the later a@'s that have an upturn between those areas.

OOP's!   I was at the eye docs this morning and they dilated my eyes and when I read that I really could not see! The body numbers for the AMG A2 are in the drivers footwell area right above where your right ankle would be when driving, usually hidden behind the lines there. It is not at uncommon for the tag to be missing. If it is there you have to be careful with it because it will be covered with several coats of paint at least. I usually try putting DOT 3 brake fluid on it and let that sit for a while since that will soften most paint and then you can wipe the paint off without damaging the tag. If it is painted in CARC then paint removers will not affect it and you will have to very carefully sand the paint off.

Here is a thread that covers all of the different spots for numbers. I am not a fan of the spare tire number theory since it is just that, a theory.

Thanks!
Turns out I might not be an owner after all. Was going to pick it up tomorrow, but there are big problems with the title.
