Another annoying little rattle to kill

Unread post by m3a1 » June 19th, 2017, 7:52 pm

Is there a reasonable fix for an emergency/parking brake lever that rattles like the Dickens? The p-brake is properly adjusted. The actuator component (meaning the bit that actually goes down in and hauls up on the brake) makes a really annoying high-speed vibratey-noise...kind of like like Alvin and the Chipmunks rollin dice in a a cup. If I put my finger on it, the noise goes away. I've put a slice of bicycle inner tube on it in something of a rubber band fashion which has toned it down somewhat but I've gotta get this sorted. It's making me nuts.

Any ideas aside from the obvious, "replace it" answer?

Cheers,
TJ

The one I hear the most is to slide a piece of hot water pipe insulation over the handle.

The rattle that annoyed me was eliminated by resetting the rivets and tightening the movement.

I started by sliding the inner tube over the whole mechanism which had the unfortunate effect of making the lever want to stand back up whilst I was driving. ( ...and it looked so darned pretty, too!)

I think Fil may have nailed it. It's going to have to be tightened up at the pivot point up top.

Be careful no to overtighten the pivot rivets.
