Photobucket

Unread post by rickf » June 30th, 2017, 10:12 am

Well, I got the photobucket notice as Vin did, but in my case they want 400.00 a year to reinstate all of the pictures they shut down on every one of my forums! probably well over a thousand pictures over 7 -10 years!!! Is that extortion or what? I sure as hell am not paying them so I guess the pics are gone for good. I know that some forums, Steel Soldiers for example, you can upload directly to the forum. Here you cannot. I am sure it could be implemented for an extra charge per year in the server but I do not own the site so I have no control over that. I do not know where the money is coming from to support the site. We had a very generous benefactor at one time but he has passed.
I am just putting this out there before all the PM's and emails and comments come in about what the forum should do. I have no control. I can contact the owner and see if he wants to do anything, it is up to him. I have tried in the past to buy the forum but he was not interested in selling it so it is totally up to him.

You can still log on to your account, you just can't copy picture anywhere but copying any that you don't have is definitely a good idea. Once everyone starts to bail they will be locking accounts next. That is what happened with the last photo service I had, lost everything. Now at least with this one I am just copying stuff so I still have copies. I see this happening with "THE CLOUD" someday also. They get you hooked and BANG, Gotchya!

So, I'm going to assume that the only way we have to move is forward. My wife uses Google which provides free hosting and email accounting so I'm going to give that a go.

I think we probably should have seen this coming with Photobucket, with their site being so irretrievably fouled with advertisements. My guess is, someone suddenly decided to see how much money it could make and while I don't begrudge them making a few bucks, they'll not see a penny from me as I am not fond of having dealings with anyone who is willing to stick a gun in my ribs and demand my wallet.

And yes, sooner or later, people are going to find out that "The Cloud" is total B.S.

Reading their latest terms 3rd party linking is only available for paid accounts. So I guess my photos on a free account will no longer be available on the forum some time soon.

Not much pint choosing an alternative service as ultimately they will also get greedy.

Problem for the site owner is that allowing direct posting of photos uses chargeable storage space.

I'm going to skip the so-called "free" hosting and going to be using URLs for the time being. It's a couple of extra clicks but there is really a noticeable improvement in quality between Photobucket and photos I'm now keeping at photos.google.com and their image editing is pretty darned good.

Cheers,
TJ

I haven't got the ransom note yet. I've gone ahead and added a photo site to my online server. If PB won't let you download your pictures her's an idea. View the pictures at the largest resolution you can and do a print screen. I have onedrive installed on my PC and all my screenshots are saved there. You can also paste into a paint program and do a save.

Yeah, mine too.  I think I have about 80-90 pictures over 4 to 5 years, and it says I have exceeded my bandwidth or something like that???????????????????? I have exceeded some limits it says. Thank goodness MOST of the pictures are copies from my files, but there are a few I would like to get back.

There was one option mentioned in my ransom note that I could sign up for a monthly fee of something like $10 or so. I may just pay up the one month, retrieve my photos and then dump the service. If that works, I will report back, otherwise forget about it!!!

Rick, when I wrote the previous statement, I was completely locked out, could not even get to my libraries after logging in. Last night, after reading your post, I rechecked it and got right in. I downloaded my primary files fine. Thanks for the heads up!!

I think they kinda got a big dose of reality
