civi tires for mutt

Unread post by Lindsay36551 » August 22nd, 2017, 4:51 pm

Hey all,
Just bought a m151a1 (67)
I'm going to be putting on some civi tires.
I want something that still says military , just not NDT or NDCC.
Any thoughts?
Will have 3 mutts in the yard by Saturday! I'm going to need a bigger kennel soon!

Kind of need to know what you are looking for in a tire. you want military but you don't want the military tire. First thing that comes to mind is bias ply Super Swampers. You can get them in a size that will fit and they are an aggressive tread.

ok, more like Horst's tires in Europe.
I don't want old style mud and snow truck tires or superswampers!

nah, you might mix up things. I am running NDMS tires, nothing I recommend to do. They are pretty much useless and I am looking forward for them to wear out. Will unfortunately take a few more years. Michel Walter is running nice civy tires on his 151.

I put a set of Dayton Timberline M/T on my 151 almost 15 years ago. 215/85r16 best I remember. I don't think they still make this size in the Timberline, but a quick search shows Goodyear Duratrac and Firestone Destination M/T in it. This is the closest size to the 7.00x16 I believe.

They ride so much smoother and less squirrelly than the NDCC that were on my Mutt before.

I would just go to Tire rack.com and look at all the tires they have in 215R85-16, Then pick the tread pattern you like. Any modern radial will be light years better than the NDCC's. I had to go to town in the rain while in Virginia, 20 miles on winding paved mountain roads and it was NOT a pleasant ride on the military tires.

Been riding on a set of Cooper Discovery LT 215 85 R16 for probably 15 years.
While they arent correct looking they are quieter and give a much better ride.
Not as squirrely as ndcc tires on my other A2.

Thanks guys!
This has helped out a lot!
Are you still running tubes? can you run a radial tire with a tube?
Best regards

Most of those running civi tires are running tubeless. Just clean up the inside of the rims good and give them a good coat of epoxy paint. Make sure it is fully cured before installing tires or you might have bead removal issues later down the road. If you decide to run tubes you need special tubes for radials and they are NOT cheap.
