Civilian M-151 engine?

Unread post by rickf » November 1st, 2017, 6:02 pm

You tell me. It has a civilian distributor. It also has civilian sensors, no military connectors anywhere. Yes, this is the one that was for sale in Illinois. It has a complete Holley carb if anyone wants it. I really did not want the engine but I wanted to get hold of that distributor and the only way to do it was get the whole engine. I did get a good deal on the engine but shipping was not cheap. I don't have time to screw with it right now so it is going to get pickled until I have time to try to get it running. I will try to get the data off of the distributor to see what it is.

Good find! I'm spitballing here, but I'd say the biggest hint as to its provenance is going to be with the internals; more specifically the cam. When I had Scout Cars many moons ago, I learned that the White JXD motor could also be found in many irrigation pumps and generator sets but internally, those engines were specifically manufactured to the purpose of running implements for long periods at one speed and under one load, unlike automobile engines.

Looks like a vintage pestolite distributor. Maybe originally for a tractor or forklift? Just a guess. What does the oval tag say?

Edit - Saw some pics that show a similar looking tag on early autolite military distributors.

If that were the case it would not have a vacuum advance distributor. And that bell housing does not look like it has ever been separated from that engine in it's lifetime. Actually none of it looks like it has ever been apart.

Let me get it cleaned out and then I will get some pics of it and make me an offer. Had some sort of funky bees nest in it which has to be cleaned out

Got pics of the distributor tag, Will have to track it down. I am thinking possibly old Ford tractor. Also note the crankcase breather line, no PVC. Looks like there never was one. The rear vacuum tap on top of the manifold has a fitting on it that I will bet was for the wipers.
The numbers on the distributor are IAT 4008 9E

Looks like an F4 134 Willys.
I don't see one with vacuum advance yet but I just started. It is a popular distributor.

https://shop.willysamerica.com/F4-134-4 ... s/1941.htm

Still searching but getting closer. Hey! I had a Henry J! Mine had a 312 "Y" block Ford in it followed by a 396 Chevy. I don't think this distributor would have worked in those engines.
According to the 1953 Auto-Lite book the MB used either the IGC-4705 or the
IAD-4008. The
IAT-4008A was used on the 1951-2 Henry J models 5130 and 523 with the
4-cylinder. It is
not listed for any Jeep vehicle. The Henry J has a positive ground system. The
only
differences listed in the IAT-4008A and the IAT-4008 and IAT-4008B (those two
were used on
Jeep vehicles) are in the weights and vacuum chamber. I added the 4008A to the
table.

as it is tagged as a M151 engine, maybe something out of an early prototype?

That is very much like the motor I modified for the 4x4 Vega, I used all the GM sensors and the distributor from the Vega motor. 8)

Horst, the motor tag is in the group of pictures above, about in the middle. No mention of M151 or military. Ken says he has never seen that tag.

Dan, I will not even ask how you mated that distributor up.

It looks like I may have gotten taken on the motor, I specifically asked him to make sure it turned fully over 360 degrees and he assured me he rotated it several times. I just tries to turn it and I get a half turn and clunk, half turn back and clunk. NOT a good sign. I texted him and he swears he turned it several times and asked me to check a few things which I will do in the morning. I believe it is blown but I will reserve judgement until I get further into it.

Civilian M-151 engine?

Unread post by Horst » November 2nd, 2017, 10:28 pm

I don't understand your comment Rick.

The tag says Model M151 and it shows an ORD No. 8754411 which is the normal number for any M151 enigne. Without any doubt it is a total different tag than on production M151 but still the info is there. That made me think it might be something early.

Your right Horst, I did not even notice that. I will have to dredge out my other early engine and see if that one has the same tag.
