You have an engine collection?
Re: Civilian M-151 engine?
Everything from two cylinder diesels up to a 572 Big Block Chevy. probably 7-8 four bolt main 350's, I lost count. Turns out this 151 engine is junk. The guy screwed me big time. I specifically asked him to turn it over and he siad he rotated th crank three full revolutions. Well. I just pulled the head after I could only get a half turn each way. One cylinder is solid rust at the top. This thing never turned one revolution let alone three. Postimage is down right now but I will post pictures once it is back up along with this guys info. Watch out for him. He apparently does work with a museum that sells on consignment.
He even sent me his web page when I old him I was uneasy with postal money orders. Learned THAT lesson!!!!! I don't give a finless brown trout if you have a site, an address or a phone number, credit card or Paypal or it don't happen!

That address will take you to one of his sales.
I also have his name and address but I am not going to put that on an open forum and open myself up to the lawyers. If you want it I will be glad to pm it to you. He is in Illinois.

Re: Civilian M-151 engine?
Pulled the head and as I suspected the number three cylinder was rusted far too bad for that engine to ever have turned over!
Pressure washed all the grunge off of it and it is a nice color, I didn't get any pics of inside the bell housing but you might see a little of the dark green around the back of the engine behind the flywheel. Never saw that on the other engines. Also check out that oil filter, I don't think I have ever seen one of those.
No clip holding the oil return line to the rocker.
Note the oil return line not in the hole
Don't recognize that brand, I have heard of Crown but never saw one.

Re: Civilian M-151 engine?
I got all the crap out of the cylinder and off the pistons and got it to turn. I have seen better looking cylinders but I am going to clean off that gasket and spray it with ultra copper and bolt it together and scrounge up a starter and see what happens. I am not really thinking it will run and if it does , probably smoke pretty bad. I also do not expect the head gasket to hold for all that long but I am not throwing any new parts on this thing right now. I am just waiting on parts to finish putting my car together and then get some promised carbs done. Then I will get back to this.

Are you talking about the numbers by the flywheel under the oil pressure sender?Horst wrote:what casting date on the block?

Re: Civilian M-151 engine?
the number above the part number shows typically a casting date. However in your case I cannot decipher the meaning. Engine color reminds me of Pontiac engine colors. Somebody build also the generator mounting bracket

Re: Civilian M-151 engine?
This is the third engine I got in this color, one was in my 151 when I got it and the other came from a 61. This one had a Holley on it so I know it is an early one. I will try to get a picture of the inside of the bell housing today, it is a dark green. It is also a very early bell housing with the starter release hole.

Re: Civilian M-151 engine?
so what does the casting date say? I looked at my 151 earlier today and it shows a full date with day/month/year

Re: Civilian M-151 engine?
Those look like VW Beetle Spark plug plugs/seals on the ends of the wires. There were used to keep air from escaping the holes in the cooling tin for the sparkplugs.
Re: Civilian M-151 engine?
Yep, sure do. Take the ends off the plug and you could probably use the whole VW plug wire end.

Re: Civilian M-151 engine?
I take it you can't use a civilian spark plug with that Distributor ?
I hope you didn't get screwed too bad on that engine.

Re: Civilian M-151 engine?
There was an adapter set made by the military to do just that. viewtopic.php?f=3&t=8413
