Long term parts storage
What is the best way to store pretty much a whole mutts worth of parts complete engine trans diffs axles front and rear suspension etc
I was hoping to try and crate everything individually with plywood and 2x4s with 4x4s for a base and supports if needed
What should I line the crates with that can be bought at tractor supply Walmart Lowe’s etc they will be stored for about 2 years indoors

Get a twenty foot container?
Some people are too busy knowing it all to ever learn anything

Re: Long term parts storage
I agree a container is the best way to go if you have someplace to put it. In some areas containers are aging now and the normal shipping firms are having to get rid of old ones. Some good prices can be found. I got one fairly cheap and had to fix a hole poked in the side and a leak on the roof. But now its dry. It does get kinda toasty in the summer and I need to rig some sort of vent system up.

Get a roll of plastic sheeting from Lowes, Set whatever box you build on a skid for ease of movement with a pallet jack. Bare metal parts should be sprayed with a metal preservative, that can also be purchased at Lowes but I can't remember the name of it. I have used it for years and I just saw it on one of the end caps on the aisles. I will update the post if I remember or see my can in the garage.
Found it, I have sprayed engine blocks with this stuff and put them under my workbench and years later they are rust free.

Re: Long term parts storage
What would you suggest putting on painted stuff and inside the engine and diffs?

Re: Long term parts storage
Painted stuff I would just leave alone, it is painted. Inside the engine, if it is cleaned and dry then spray it with the Fluid film. If it is still oily from use it will be fine as is. Same with the diffs, If they still have gear oil on them they will be fine. Is this indoor or outdoor storage?

Re: Long term parts storage
MUTT vet had some good ideas a while back(May'2012), but you all's ideas are about the same. I have an engine/transmission just setting outside on a skid, I threw a tarp over it, I've squirted oil in the cylinders then turned engine over a few times, I guess I should take valve cover off, then pour oil over the rockers?
put cover back on. I also sprayed fluid film in the cylinders I guess I am being redundant right now so maybe I should just stop.

Re: Long term parts storage
It will be indoor storage possibly even climate controlled but they will be transported by people that probably don’t give 2 shits about it and will complain that it’s heavy lol

Re: Long term parts storage
Boy the military has changed! If we complained something was heavy they took away one of your helpers and then you still had to move it. You learned real fast not to complain. Anyway, I think if you put the stuff on a skid in a box and wrapped in plastic. Bare metal sprayed with fluid film then you will be good to go. It will age better than you. Now whether they will lose it or not is another story. Thinking about it you might want to ask ahead about the skid, it depends on how small of a space they are putting it in and if they are moving the stuff by hand or with equipment. Over a two year period it will probably be moved a couple times as others come and go around you so you want to make it durable but easy for them to handle. Can't hurt to ask.

Re: Long term parts storage
All the parts a crated sprayed with fluid film and wrapped in contractor trash bags tomorrow is the big day where they go away
Only thing I fucked up was the engine was on a palate and I didn’t cover the cracks so mice will get in.....but I covered the intake and exhaust with steel wool and tape
Even crated both diffs and front suspension
We will see what the movers think
