gas tank compartment restoration

Unread post by Lindsay36551 » December 20th, 2017, 7:20 pm

Hey all,
I'm working on a new project and need some advice.
I need to replace the floor in the gas tank area.
I have an old tank that I have cut in half . My question is do I have to cut it length wise and put a 3 " strip down the middle to make it fit the floor opening?
If you have tackled this project can you please explain how you did it. Pics would be great also if available
Best regards
Lindsay

Personally I would get a large contour gauge and your other mutt and make a template from that one and then I would start with a fresh sheet of metal and hammer out the proper shape using the contour gauge for checking. It all depends on the quality of the restoration you are planning on doing to this vehicle. High quality takes time and effort and can't rushed or short cutted.

I agree with Rick,
Some time with a contour gauge, shot bag and hammer will provide the best results if you have the time and skill set. If not find someone who can fabricate one for you.
When I am working on mine I always ask myself if someone is going to think BUBBA did the work or dose it look professional and correct.
Just my 2 cents
